Some news: I’m moving to Washington this autumn to become a BBC North America Correspondent. I’ll have been the BBC’s last South America correspondent as my post is closing in the cuts. Before I go, a look back at some of the highlights of the last 2.5 years👇🧵

Brazilians head to the polls tomorrow for an incredibly divisive election between President Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro. My primer here, on how Brazil has changed and the uphill battle that creates for Lula, and whether he can claw it back: bbc.com/news/articles/cw80zx…

One poll puts Lula ahead of Bolsonaro in round 2 blaming abstention in round 1. It’s true abstention was HIGH. 33mil eligible voters didn’t vote and Lula’s vote dipped about 20% in some areas without transferring to Bolsonaro. Disillusionment, or will any more show up next time?

This is one poll - and worth reemphasising that almost all the others put Bolsonaro ahead, not least as he’s expected to pick up substantial votes from knocked-out candidates. But the Q for Lula is how much of that abstention was complacency vs a lack of enthusiasm for him.
