if you committed this to a codebase i worked in, i would do everything in my power to replace this with a couple asserts and see to it you leave my team
please for the future you do not commit code you don't understand

ceiling is being raised. cursor's copilot helped us write "superhuman code" for a critical feature. We can read this code, but VERY few engineers out there could write it from scratch.
Took lots of convincing too. "come on, this must be possible, try harder". and obviously- done in parts.

Been a while since I had a mad idea, but is it possible to boot a machine (PXE) with eBPF 🐝
Time to find out.

the industry currently relies on a hard fought, narrowly circumscribed, widely understood and shared definition of what open source is.
if it suddenly means something different, the term by definition becomes meaningless because that shared understanding is no longer shared.

BootGen 1.0 released for iPXE Anywhere customers to try out. I will generate USB keys for booting to iPXE without the need for PXE infrastructure. I can also add/sync BranchCache caches with the keys and back. This allows you to use any USB based dock to build any laptop/tablet!

I just read the Clayton Craft's (colleague at @igalia) blog post. Interesting reading if you are looking for ideas about how to network booting ARM boards such the RPI4 or similar using @iPXE.

#iPXE (@ipxe) now supports MAC Address passthrough (pass thru?) with supported hardware (Lenovo, Dell, HP etc.) but Microsoft still doesn't support MAC Address pass thru in their hardware. This works with any dongle, not just Realtek ones. 🥳github.com/ipxe/ipxe/commit/…

@vultr Bare Metal now supports booting via @ipxe. Hat tip to the container orchestration experts @CyclePlatform for being early adopters and providing valuable feedback.

If you want a cool weekend "linux from scratch" adventure, I highly recommend following @ipxe script:
#!ipxe
kernel bzImage console=ttyS0 initrd=busybox.static
initrd busybox.static /bin/sh mode=777
boot
If you can then bootstrap the rest of the system you win a prize from me!

Running code on Raspberry Pi 3A VPU🥳. The VPU is a managment core on the Raspberry GPU, trough the mailbox interface its possible to execute code on it. Here I toggle GPIO2 directly from the VPU, the CPU just idles in Linux that moment :) Free realtime core yay !

Also, if you do not have answers for “what problem are we solving”, “who are we building it for” or (at Uber) “what impact do we roughly expect”, you should not even start building.
If you have the answers, every eng & stakeholder should know this: you *need* to write it down.

c/c++ is reliable enough for @NASA to run an autonomous vehicle on an alien planet. safety and reliability are possible without rewriting everything in @rustlang. let's use it where it is useful, not just because it's cool or a good career move. github.com/nasa/fprime

When working with @BankofAmerica security team we asked @ajassy and aws security team to allow pxe booting of @awscloud instances 8 years ago they were wondering if anybody would ever use it. We still funded lots of the crypto in @ipxe hoping that eventually it will trickle in😜

yes -- it is extremely cleanly written and a delight to hack on (well, I guess TBF my bar was set by GRUB, so...) basically from 0 experience it took me a couple of hours to figure out the architecture and produce a mid-level patch adding new functionality

Domain-specific computing architectures (driven largely by @risc_v) will unlock far greater utilization efficiencies on both time and money dimensions than “cloud” has and will for on-prem.
