The Democrats may have taken control of the House and the Senate, they may have humiliated Donald Trump and the Republican Party, but the real fight is only beginning. It is not simply a battle to hold the corrupt Trump regime to account, something that can only be done if the Democrats are willing overcome their reluctance to carry out impeachment proceedings against the president. It is also a battle to sweep away the corporate-indentured hierarchy of the Democratic Party, including Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries. The Democratic Party since the presidency of Bill Clinton, who gave us the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the greatest betrayal of the working class since the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act, and gutted New Deal-era welfare programs such as the Aid to Families with Dependent Children, is a more polished version of corporate and oligarchic rule, abjectly subservient to the war machine, the Israel lobby and their funders in the billionaire class. The country is broken. Corruption, in both parties, is endemic. Federal agencies have been hollowed out and destroyed. The courts, including the Supreme Court, have been handed over to right-wing ideologues. The working class is crippled with debt peonage and substandard wages. Constitutional norms and protections have been erased. Billionaires, including Trump, pay little to no income tax. The 2010 Citizens United Supreme Court ruling, which allows big business to fund their hand-picked candidates, sustains a system of legalized bribery. The public may clamor for a raise in the minimum wage, Medicare for All, regulation of the big banks and private equity firms, an end to arms shipments to Israel and campaign finance reform, but no one in the leadership of the Democratic Party listens or cares. They serve their paymasters. Will cutthroat capitalism, sold to us under the sanitized name of neoliberalism, be allowed to continue to impoverish the citizenry and funnel wealth upwards into the hands of the 1 percent? Will corporations be regulated and policed? Will corporate criminals be brought to trial? Will our democracy be restored? Or will the grotesque sight of a trillionaire, Elon Musk, gutting federal agencies and pouring hundreds of millions into elections to try and control the outcome be normalized? The handful of politicians who attempt to confront the corruption and the devastation visited on the American working class through deindustrialization and deregulation, such as Bernie Sanders, see their campaigns sabotaged by the Democratic Party leadership, including Barack Obama. We must demand that progressive candidates, including Michigan senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed and Maine’s Troy Jackson, build coalitions to oust the Democratic Party leadership, raise the minimum wage, enact universal health care, prosecute corporate crime and impeach Trump. It will be up to us. The Democratic Party hierarchy will see the results not as a repudiation of Trump, but an endorsement of the flaccid and ineffectual position of a party that stands for little and fights for less. This would be yet another betrayal by the Democrats of voters. It would keep alive the very real prospect of another fascist, one better organized and more intelligent, taking the White House in two years. Of course, this fight will mean not only jettisoning a corrupt Democratic Party leadership, but turning on the mega-donors, lobbyists and corporations that fund and control the Democratic Party. The effort to wrest the party back from the hands of corporations and oligarchs will be vicious and difficult. It will require us to rely on the power of mass movements to sever these bonds. Nothing else will work. If we fail, our anemic democracy will not be saved by these midterm elections, but doomed.

For 18 years, corporate media effectively banned the few of us who dared to utter this lesson about Obama turning hope and change into more of the same. I am glad @corbintrent said it - and that it is finally allowed to be uttered in corporate media.

as someone who has built a sizable and approachable left community online, the secret sauce is routinely purging narcissistic woke scolds who deploy emancipatory language when they want to center their immediate desires selfishly as a separate convo is taking place. it’s also caused a lot of grief from ppl who see out of context clips, but nevertheless boundaries must be drawn.

💢 Israel has bombed and devastated Gaza’s sewage and sanitation infrastructure, and now deliberately blocks Palestinians from the landfills, machinery and essential supplies needed to contain the resulting public health catastrophe. One consequence is a massive rat and pest infestation, with Palestinians, including children, being bitten in their sleep. Four in five sewage pumping stations are not functioning, with some 40,000 cubic meters of untreated sewage flowing each day. By July, 60% of Gaza’s population was living within 10 meters of sewage or human waste and more than 900,000 people were exposed to garbage accumulating in residential areas, according to UN OCHA. Rodents or pests were reported at 81% of displacement sites surveyed in April, affecting roughly 1.45 million Palestinians. Both of Gaza’s sanitary landfills lie beyond the Israeli-imposed “Yellow Line,” and the UN says access remains banned by Israel. Israel also requires approval and blocks entry of machinery and spare parts needed to remove garbage and rubble, while engine oils, pest-control chemicals and other essential supplies remain severely restricted. Israel permitted 3 tonnes of rodenticide and 3,000 liters of pesticide into Gaza in May, but the UN said pest-control efforts remained limited and a full response requires sustained supplies, heavy equipment and access to the landfills Israel continues to block with Gaza’s sanitation system having completely collapsed.
The rat population in Gaza has increased dramatically after Israel destroyed the sanitation and sewer systems, leading to the accumulation of garbage and rubble. These rats are not only chewing through clothing, bedding, and stored food, but they are also biting Palestinians, adding yet another layer of suffering to an already devastating humanitarian crisis cause by the occupation.

I said this about AI well over a year ago. Using it to diagnose and fire people with medical conditions so they lose their insurance AND their income is somehow even more heartless and evil than I’d predicted.
Meta used AI to target workers with medical conditions for layoffs, according to a new lawsuit. Twenty-six former Meta employees are suing, accusing the company of using AI that disproportionately targeted people with disabilities or workers who took medical leave in selecting people for mass layoffs. reuters.com/world/meta-used-…

Studies now present a striking picture of what happens when private equity firms acquire hospitals and nursing homes: predictable increases in harm and deaths. One landmark study shows: patient deaths up about 11% after such acquisitions.

“Steal their women & children” is the new Zionism. you can’t make shit up anymore
Israeli minister calls for kidnapping of Lebanese women and children to break Hezbollah morale —— Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir urged the political-security cabinet to abduct and imprison Lebanese women and children as a psychological warfare tactic against Hezbollah, according to a closed-door leak published by Hebrew news outlet Walla. During a high-level ministerial meeting reviewing expanded military calculations, Ben-Gvir demanded that Tel Aviv abandon conventional strategy and explicitly target the social and familial core of the Lebanese resistance network. "We must think outside the box regarding Hezbollah," Ben-Gvir asserted to his fellow cabinet members, according to the report. The Israeli minister added that alongside occupying southern territory and intensifying lethal strikes on personnel, Israeli forces should actively round up civilians. "We should arrest their women and children and take them to prison; this is what hurts them the most," he stated.
