There’s a really pronounced divide between people who are on the AI side of things and people who are on the biology side of things. Even among people working in AI, the divide persists based on where they’re focused. The AI side, adherents of scaling laws and the bitter lesson, believe that AI getting better means AI being more capable of novel discoveries in medicine (that go beyond discovering new drugs in well understood targets or speeding up dry lab work etc). The biology people think the idea of a bitter lesson in biology is kind of ridiculous and that regardless of AI’s capabilities it’s going to be at least 5-10 years until you could hope to reliably simulate human toxicology in silico (right now AI/ML can’t even reliably simulate in vivo studies like binding affinities or functional assays). Even the most AI pilled of them, who will list all the areas that AI can reduce the time spent on various areas, don’t think the concept of AI discovering novel targets or generating new understanding of causal biology is realistic in the near term. Most, in fact, will readily characterize the assumption that even an “ASI” level model could find cures hidden in our current understanding (without expanding that understanding with significantly more biological data) as patently false. This was a big part of why we wanted to experience it ourselves by using AI for a (very) small portion of what it can do in biology. It was both mind blowing and revealed some poignant insights into how different the problem of making AI better at something like coding is to the problems of biology. Even if it unlocked the ability to generate new molecules at a stunning pace, its simulation (in silico) of binding only had 49% accuracy. And if we wanted to improve that, we’d need to feed it back the data from the lab - data that took about 30x as long to get as it took to generate the molecules. And these were tests in a test tube (turn of phrase), imagine how long it would take if we wanted to improve the model with data that required recruiting humans and monitoring their reactions. Human biology is very complex, and adding a drug - especially a novel drug and doubly so for a novel drug acting on a novel mechanism - means mapping interactions that have nth-order-effects that we don’t have the data to predict. Virtual cells have made advancements enabled by AI, but the perturbations equate to a small fraction of the possible. This is before you even get into curing disease, especially uniquely human diseases. Brain function involves cellular identities that are unique to humans, meaning animal studies are of little use. How long does it take to understand what the side effects of chronic administration of a drug in humans are? AI can speed up analyzing the data, or designing the trial or even getting it approved…but it can’t make a 6 month trial complete in 3 months. I think its important to point out that significant advancements can be made in AI that contribute to biology, while also being realistic about how much it speeds up something as complex as curing a specific cancer or diseases of the brain.

we built the god machine and the first thing we did was unleash cyber attacks across the web so we have to go outside now. thank you.

Who’s building the Blackwall?
This is the most serious 48 hours in cybersecurity history. "Black October" they're calling it It seems every *hour* there's a new incident, that in a typical year, would be one of the biggest incidents of the *entire year* SUMMARY OF THE LAST 48 HOURS: YEAR-LEVEL INCIDENTS (In a typical year, these would be among the biggest incidents of the year): 1. PHP2Shell: a hole in the software behind ~70% of websites. Governments took sites offline. 2. eMudhra: the master keys that prove websites are real were cracked. One was the number 4. 3. California: data on every public school student since 2023 stolen, including disability status 4. Railway: hackers stole customers' secret keys from a hosting platform used by millions of developers 5. Zeabur: 321,810 accounts breached. The company is shutting down. 6. LiteLLM: an AI tool downloaded 3.4 million times a day was poisoned with a password stealer 7. GitLab: a 10-out-of-10 severity hole in every version since 2014 8. Cairn: criminals used an AI hacking tool to break into 100+ companies 9. Ahold Delhaize: hackers knocked the owner of Food Lion and Stop & Shop offline 10. Onamae: malware planted on up to 26,739 customer servers in Japan MONTH-LEVEL INCIDENTS (In a typical month, these would be among the biggest incidents): 11. Signal: a bug could leave your mic and camera on after you hang up 12. NGINX: 3 critical holes in software running ~1/3 of websites 13. HTTP/3: a single connection can crash 7 of the 10 web server types tested 14. Plex: hackers breaking into home media servers 15. SafePay ransomware: FBI warns it has hit 600+ critical infrastructure organizations 16. Palo Alto: ransomware gangs breaking in through company firewalls 17. alright so I tried to figure out why things are blowing up simple summary: it's geopolitics. and if the Middle East gets bad enough, then the backers for OpenAI's $1.4T funding round could pull out so that's sending shockwaves through markets bc they're the big data center tenant ppl are worried about. the incremental appears to be that Ukraine is also getting unhinged there's not an AI specific catalyst this seems more like geopolitics. Last night TSM guided acceleration and Citi pressed if there was demand destruction on memory - TSM said no, that's already factored into the guide which means there's not some specific Korea fundamental thing -- and price action there is likely more of a margin call Ukraine bonds have dumped 20% since July. He just asked for $70b Euros from the EU while Trump denied shutting off Starlink (Elon had said it wasn't him, so it just looks like a sht show). Trump told Zelensky to stop attacking Russian refineries. Zelensky has since crashed out and said "The block is out, we're done". And is now vowing to hit Russian refineries. And it appears he's already followed through hitting a facility in Surgut with drones Indonesia got delisted from the MSCI and the entire country equity index is -14% in a day, increasing the likelihood of EM contagion Iran has moved their nuclear facilities under ground in PickAxe mountain and trump has talked about using the "MOAB" which stands for Massive Ordnance Air Blast - which is just shy of a nuclear blast. THis is a 21,600 pound bomb that isn't even particularly effective at hitting underground sites so might just be generically destructive. For some reason Trump thinks that doing this after mid terms is fine - but oil is already pumping reports from Israel meanwhile: Israel now deploying mobile bomb shelters in major cities, with 2 reportedly spotted in Ashdod and Tel Aviv within 24hs, as IDF raises its alert level to highest across all fronts amid preparations for a possible strike on Iran fun times

There is absolutely no alpha left in being an excel monkey better than anyone else This was already the case before AI, but more true today than ever before I am literally watching Claude in Excel build a forecast model better than 80% of analysts while I write this The hours of work it would take to put together a coherent analysis can now be done in minutes with proper prompting and instructions All the alpha in the investing world now sits outside of your desk. This includes talking to management teams, experts, former employees, competitors, trying the product itself, and so on Fundamentally think that the job of an investor will slowly start to resemble that of a journalist The real work will be done through conversations that an LLM cannot capture in the open web or inside of documents that everyone has access to

Many sellers in AI land, defensive sectors outperforming. Anthropic’s lack of ARR numbers is spooking everyone right now, alongside bonds north of 5% and midterms coming up. It’s very possible AI is a life changing technology that is also a terrible business/investment. I think we could bounce tomorrow but uncertainty will remain until midterms / Anthropic IPO / geopolitics clear up.

another reason why i am so bullish bitcoin here last cycle it did not even make a new ATH against gold, if you believe in the thesis that $BTC is the best form of digital hard money then the gap between $BTC & $XAU is going to continue to close gold is $30T, btc is $1.7T & the closer this gap gets the more it makes sense for governments to hold bitcoin on their balance sheets the same way they do with gold
thesis around buying bitcoin spot here is same as its always been hardest form of money non-seizable by govts & transferable cross borders instantaneously w/ out hassle, not affected by persistent devaluation of dollars & long term store of value to preserve wealth digital gold thesis took a hit in 2024/25 as gold outperformed during its first real rally since not making new all time highs since ~2011, believe that all it would take for confidence to return to this thesis would be momentum to the upside agree w/ @_tolks on dxy strength & upwards movements in rates dragging down gold but we are near peak hawkishness as inflation should subside as strait of hormuz reopens & gives room for warsh+fed to cut instead of hiking, lots of people sitting on realized gains from ai stocks & will diversify into RE+Cash+long term SOV of which gold & bitcoin both fit into that LT portfolio, insti interest from people like Paul Tudor Jones still present even with current negative press of saylor situation ive been very bearish btc because of saylor & didnt think 60k would hold at beginning of june but am reacting as buyers stepped in at key level, feels like we are currently pricing in the peak worst scenario of him having to sell as is evident by price action with mstr & strc, even if he does need to sell btc wont have to do so for ~6 months+ buying bitcoin here into beginning of Q3 is good trade setup at long term historical support converging with worst sentiment ive seen on the asset
