The human brain: My, what a well-organized “kludge”!
Looking back at a neuroscience book that was popular two decades ago is quite revealing in the light of new findings

Why is a concept like the kludge brain, out of date and at odds with the facts, somehow more representative of science than an inference to design would be?

I’d like to make a case, from the perspective of a creator and graphic designer, that the anxiety about generative AI is largely unwarranted

Those who worry about AI eliminating jobs have failed to learn the lesson of history, which has seen countless jobs eliminated time and again, and each time more jobs created.

Three Main Things That Shaped Western Civilization

Aside from the Crucifixion of Jesus and His Resurrection spearheading Western Civilization, which is a given, most people are unaware of the profound overturning of culture The Beatles had on society.
Euthanasia without informing the patient is bound to happen in a system where almost all health care is a government monopoly. When the ship is sinking, as it was bound to do, the load is lightened.
Blocking the internet for everyone makes more sense to the French government than enforcing the law?:
France’s Prime Minister sent a letter to Orange, SFR, Free and Bouygues telling them to prepare to block TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram and X for up to 12 hours if protests flared again. He asked them to keep it confidential.
The government wanted the order delivered privately to each company, with nothing in the official journal. The public would get a press release 30 minutes before the block went live.
It was the operators’ lawyers who asked whether shutting down four platforms nationwide was necessary or proportionate. Orange insisted on a formal, signed order.
France’s top administrative court ruled the 2024 TikTok block in New Caledonia illegal last year. The government drew up a bigger one anyway. Staff were on call all weekend. Nobody pulled the switch this time, but they built it ready for the next one.

Let's hope honest research about trans violence can be published in journals:
The DOJ is seeking research grant applications from scholars wanting to research what’s behind the rise in violence from trans-identified people. There have been many killings and threats of m—rder from that small demographic. thepostmillennial.com/doj-of…

This is not good news for the ethics of organ transplantation:
A new investigation authored by China researcher Sarah Cook and published by the International Coalition to End Transplant Abuse in China (ETAC), reveals how the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is embedded throughout China’s organ transplant sector.
“Every entity that Chinese officials present to international audiences as ostensibly independent or as a ‘third party’ is in fact a node in the same Party-controlled system.”
Doctors who are CCP members pledge to carry out the Party’s decisions, observe its discipline, protect its secrets, remain loyal to the Party and “never betray the Party.” Violating these commitments can carry more severe personal and professional consequences than breaching medical ethics.
Distinguished Professor Wendy Rogers, clinical ethicist and Chair of ETAC’s International Advisory Board said, “Chinese transplant doctors are placed in an impossible situation. Their professional ethical obligations can be overruled by state-enforced demands for CCP fealty. In this CCP-controlled system, we cannot accept assurances of reform, as no part of China’s transplant oversight system operates independently of the Party-State hierarchy.”
A former internal medicine doctor, now outside China, told researchers:
“Chinese people live in an environment filled with the CCP’s culture. Under the terrifying pressure of the CCP, everyone knows—if you yourself dare to speak up, you’d be the next to disappear.”

Cancel Culture may prove a costly strategy for the left. In BC, they made people more afraid of them than of the consequences of trying to get rid of them:
"Conservatives Gallop to Victory on Backs of the Cancelled"
Should Conservatives be thanking Dallas Brodie, Kerry-Lynne Findlay & other cancel-culture victims for their historic BC election win?
Yes, writes NWT Editor David Brett.

School Attendance Crisis: Today in Ontario, nearly 60 percent of high school students don’t meet our era’s far more indulgent attendance standards. The result? Poor educational results, demoralized teachers and even more chaotic classrooms.

If this is what the legal profession is coming to, it won't be of much assistance to fact-based reasoning in the future:
Glenna did an unusual thing that people typically don't do: she checked a citation in a law review article to see whether the citation said what the authors claimed it did.
She found that the citation said the opposite of what the authors claimed it did.
She then asked the editor of the law review for a correction.
The editor did not reply to the request.
She then asked the authors for comment on the incorrect citation.
The authors acknowledged that the citation was erroneous and regretted the error.
The authors then insisted that the citation did not matter to their actual argument because nothing in their argument depended on the citation being right.
Glenna then wrote a post explaining why the erroneous citation was in fact important to their actual argument, and why the erroneous citation also exposed a wider ignorance of the subject on which the authors were writing. (She claims, convincingly, that it's important to know what sex is in order to understand what sex discrimination is, and that being able to define what sex is is an inextricable aspect of knowing what sex is.)
I consulted with some lawyer friends in a chat group who helpfully explained to me that no one ever reads footnotes, no one checks the underlying references, and no one cares if they are correct or not because law review articles like the one Murray and Shaw published are merely political advocacy masquerading as legal scholarship that no one reads, and therefore not to expect the Supreme Court Review to issue a correction for a citation that the authors are on the record admitting was erroneous.
Do I have all that right, @williambaude?
Britain is quite literally becoming Orwell's Airstrip One but apparently most Brits are okay with it:
The UK has introduced new “Respect Orders”, under which those guilty of the crime of “distressing others” could be put under curfew, banned from public spaces, and forced into mandatory re-education.
