When I taught law school at Ohio State, we had a mock hearing in a courtroom with a real judge. How these 3Ls dressed and acted was a small part of their project grade. I told the men to wear suits/ties and occasionally dinged a few for casual blazers, no tie, etc. Because the court standard is less clear for women, I told them to wear something professional and I would defer to a female professor on close calls. We never had any close calls. As a Magistrate and Acting Judge over two decades, I've had to gently admonish a few lawyers (always men) about their court attire. I did so quietly, at sidebar.
