What do you need to know about lifting weights when you're over 50? Dr @jacksonfyfe shared his expertise on @ABCaustralia Radio Sydney's Nightlife program:

🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️Why do we need a strength training awareness day?
Myself and the strength training academic giants before me have found that -
1. The general public are mostly unaware of strength guidelines and what ‘counts’ as strength training (our science communication needs to improve in this area, @jacksonfyfe has a newsletter and @mackinprof is prolific on social media to help in this area)
2. Some exercise instructors are also unaware of guidelines and how important progressive strength training is for all ages and abilities (@BexTownley and @LaterLifeTrain are working on it)
3. Not all health care professionals feel confident or comfortable discussing the benefits of strength with patients (clinical exercise physiologists @csep_scpe @ClinExPhysUK @CEPAupdates could play a BIG role here)
4. There is room for improvement in the implementation, sustainability, and scale of evidence-based progressive strength training in community settings (projects @STARTwSTRENGTH and @STRONGERaHOME are looking to help here!)

Resistance training “works” in older adults.
But are the benefits less in the "oldest old" (85+)?
After 12 weeks of whole-body resistance training, older adults aged 85+ had similar gains in muscle size, strength, and functional performance to those aged 65-75 years.
It’s never too late to get started.

🔑 Findings below!

3 sets of repeated chair stands (5 or 10 reps per set), 3 times per week.
Sound feasible?
Over 8 weeks, this was enough to improve:
Muscle thickness: ⬆️8-9%
Muscle quality index: ⬆️40-45%
Relative sit-to-stand power: ⬆️29-38%
Resistance training doesn’t have to be fancy to be effective.

Exercise is about more than just fitness or aesthetics.
It’s what it means for our ability to stay independent for longer.
Here’s the cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2peak) needed for common daily activities.
Once our fitness drops below these thresholds, we can no longer “afford” the metabolic cost of tasks needed to remain independent.
One of the many reasons to stay active for as long as possible.

New @DeakinIPAN research study - Please share with family and friends worldwide!🌏
We're inviting adults aged 60 years and older to share their views on physical function 💪🚶
- How important is physical function to you?
- What support would you like in order to maintain or improve physical function?
Participation involves completing two brief, anonymous online surveys.
