Thatcher spent the North Sea instead on high unemployment in the 1980s
NEW Britain’s missing sovereign wealth fund… Treasury officials have modelled that had the UK done what Norway did with North Sea revenues, there would be a £1 trillion fund… As Chancellor sets up Energy Wealth Fund, a look at the long historical argument about where the oil windfall went, including from interviews with those who have run Norways $2.4 trillion fund, now the biggest in the world, filled from the proceeds of the same North Sea. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cm4g…

The Guildford Four were released on this day 1989. They spent 15 years in prison for something they didn’t do. Their only crime was being Irish.

These can go fucking do one. They hate everything RL stands for, the fact it was born from Socialism and wouldn’t class NSemba as English.
Good luck to England in the Rugby League World Cup!

Brilliant to see Salford’s historic Cheering Fusilier restored to its former glory. A huge thank you to Salford Council and everyone involved in getting the plinth repaired so quickly, with a special thanks to Michelle Lindsey for helping make it happen.

I would say this to all our local politicians from all of our different political parties: Sunderland’s families deserve secure homes, our veterans deserve respect and support, and communities struggling with stretched services deserve to be heard. But people genuinely fleeing war and persecution are not our enemies. They are human beings, too. #Sunderland has a proud history of solidarity, shaped by generations who knew hardship and understood the importance of a helping hand. We can demand a fairer asylum system without closing our hearts to those seeking safety. The Christian test of leadership is not simply how fiercely we defend our own, but whether we can recognise the dignity of those who arrive among us. We must never make the vulnerable compete against one another for compassion. Sunderland absolutely deserves fairness from Westminster, investment in housing and public services, and an asylum system that works. But it also deserves leadership that brings people together. We must put Sunderland first without putting humanity last.
Sunderland is full. No more asylum dispersal. Enough is enough. Today, I have formally written to Labour’s Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, demanding an immediate halt to further asylum dispersal into Sunderland. I’m absolutely fed up of our city and our region being treated as Whitehall’s dumping ground for its utterly broken asylum and immigration system. Sunderland has just 0.4% of the UK’s population, yet accommodates approximately 0.9% of those receiving asylum support nationally. That’s more than double our fair share. Meanwhile, hardworking local families are struggling to find homes, vulnerable residents are facing homelessness, and veterans who served this country are still waiting for the support they deserve. And Labour’s answer? Keep piling more pressure onto Sunderland. Not on my watch. I’ve demanded an immediate freeze on further placements, a halt to the procurement of additional asylum accommodation, and a full investigation into why our city has been expected to shoulder such a disproportionate burden. My administration is reviewing every asylum dispersal and resettlement arrangement involving this Council. We will pursue every lawful power available to protect our communities. I will not stand idly by while faceless bureaucrats in Whitehall make the decisions and the people of Sunderland are left to deal with the consequences. I’ve given the Home Secretary 14 days to respond. I don’t want excuses, empty promises or another pathetic Whitehall brush-off. I want action. Sunderland is not an overflow facility for Labour’s failed asylum policies. Our housing stock is not limitless. And our residents will not be treated as an afterthought by a Government that refuses to get a grip. I’ve had enough. Sunderland has had enough. No more dispersal. Sunderland first. 🇬🇧
