A woman in South Korea was slashed across the face and neck with a knife by a male coworker, the suspect in this incident, on 28.10.2026.
These are wounds that can never be undone.
She is my sister, and she is still fighting for her life.
If you can read English, if you have a voice, and if you work in the press, please share this story. Repost it for my sister. Repost it for every woman.
I am the younger sibling of the woman who was attacked with a knife at Wondang Station in Goyang, South Korea, on October 28, 2026.
Some early reports said she was injured in the neck and legs. That information circulated before paramedics and doctors could fully assess her, and it is wrong.
What our family has been told is that her most serious injuries are to her face and neck. They were cut so badly that she is difficult to recognize. Major blood vessels in her neck, including vessels near the spine, were damaged. Organs on her side, including the lungs and liver, were also severely injured. She is in critical condition.
The surgeon who treated her reportedly asked how long the blade must have been, because the wounds were so deep. She lost nearly three liters of blood. An adult woman typically has around four to five liters, so by typical estimates she lost well over half of her blood volume. She still needs further major surgery, but her condition is too unstable to proceed. She has not fully regained consciousness.
On the day of the attack, she was walking back to work with a coworker after lunch at about 12:30PM. The suspect called her out and asked to speak with her alone, singling her out and excluding the coworker. That coworker found the situation strange and stayed near the scene. This is how the attack was witnessed, and help was called quickly.
The suspect reportedly attacked her from behind, in the neck area. Another female coworker tried to stop the attack and was not harmed. We understand that the suspect targeted only my sister. We were told he had been carrying two mountain knives for about six months. We were also told that investigators found he had searched for the word “carotid artery” before the attack.
Before his arrest, he reportedly sprayed something on his own body in what looked like a staged performance, which we believe was meant to justify what he had done.
According to reports, the suspect has a mental illness, claims the act was impulsive, and says he has no memory of the incident.
However, we cannot see how a person who singled out one victim, separated her from others, chose where to strike, and prepared in advance could be described as acting on impulse. Taken together, the timing of the attack, the six months of carrying two knives, the targeting of one specific person, and the staged performance afterward lead us to believe this was not an impulsive crime but a meticulously planned attempted murder. We do not accept that a claim of diminished capacity should lessen the seriousness of what was done to her.
We also do not believe this is only a story about one person who should not have been hired. We believe several failures contributed. We were told she had struggled at work with this suspect lots of times and requested a transfer. We question whether the workplace selected and managed its staff carefully enough, and whether her request was properly heard and acted on.
Beneath all of this, we believe strongly, lies a deep and widespread hostility toward women in Korean society. If the victim had been a man, or if the coworker and supervisor had been a man, would the same plan have been carried out? We cannot stop asking this question. And we know that many women in Korea live with the fear that it could have been them.
My sister is still fighting for her life. Our parents are spending each day outside an intensive care unit.
Please do not minimize the case; her injuries are far more severe. Also, do not let this be treated as a minor incident or forgotten as one person’s isolated act. We ask that the investigation and trial examine the planning behind this attack and that a claim of mental illness not be used to erase the weight of what was done to her.
Journalists, especially those who can report in English and Korean, please contact us through DM. We are also seeking advice from anyone with experience in criminal procedure or supporting crime victims in Korea.
Please keep asking questions, and please keep paying attention.
