"The Global South is home to some of AI’s most enthusiastic and inventive users, and their experiments could help us rethink our own institutions. [In the West], a culture of fear encourages protectionism: We hunker down and romanticize legacy systems rather than ask what might replace them." Thoughtful, and thought-provoking, from Payal Arora in @restofworld. restofworld.org/2026/west-ai…

*** Nepal-Tibet Disaster Update*** Our preliminary analysis of #Sentinel-1 satellite #radar observations from January 8 to August 19, 2026, reveals measurable #downslope motion, reaching ~10 mm/month, within the #glacier/ice-rock system near the apparent source of the #August 26 #Nepal–#Tibet disaster. Remarkably, the satellite observations extend to just seven days before the catastrophic collapse and flood. The results suggest that the #slope was #deforming #prior to #failure and raise an important question: could satellite radar observations help #identify #developing #instability in #high-#mountain glacier and rock systems before #catastrophic #collapse? @UNUINWEH @VT_Science @EOI_lab

How people can help Nepal’s flood-affected communities A list of funds and organizations taking donations, including the Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund. Caution: Fundraising for disasters is a common vector for scams in the first 48 to 72 hours, so before transferring money, please verify account details directly through the official channels or Nepal’s consulate and embassy’s official website and social media channels. kathmandupost.com/national/2…

Happy birthday, President John F. Kennedy. Your words to the Yale University Class of 1962 echo today: "As every past generation has had to disenthrall itself from an inheritance of truisms and stereotypes, so in our own time we must move on from the reassuring repetition of stale phrases to a new, difficult, but essential confrontation with reality. For the great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie - deliberate, contrived, and dishonest - but the myth - persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic. Too often we hold fast to the clichés of our forebears. We subject all facts to a prefabricated set of interpretations. We enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought. Mythology distracts us everywhere - in government as in business, in politics as in economics, in foreign affairs as in domestic affairs." jfklibrary.org/asset-viewer/…

Some words of wisdom from JFK in the age of AI: However extraordinary computers may be, we are still ahead of them & man is still the most extraordinary computer of all, his judgement, his nerve & the lessons he can learn from experience, still make him unique.

"There is a balance to be struck, and it requires the one thing that is hardest to do when you're anxious about your future: prioritizing long-term understanding over short-term output. Nobody has ever been good at that. I'm not sure why we'd start now." A must-read meditation by Minas Karamanis on science, learning and understanding: “The machines are fine. I'm worried about us.” ergosphere.blog/posts/the-ma…
