We're delighted to launch the expansion of tennis on @TheAthletic, taking you beyond the baseline. The brilliant @CDEccleshare and @MattFutterman will bring you the biggest moments, exploring how tennis and culture shape each other, now and in the future nytimes.com/athletic/5481626…

New today, an article going in extreme detail on something many of us have always wondered but is typically poorly-explained — what's happening inside NFL headsets during a game? What do these people actually do?

coco gauff's music video debut in gunna's "pop it" is a vindication of the relationships and respect she has built across music and fashion, as well as the fact that she can hit a bomb on command. @avarwallace on her latest serve, free-to-read nytimes.com/athletic/7696833…

since gaël monfils appeared on the retired list, the atp 250 event in lyon — at which he had a wild card and was going to play an exhibition with tsonga, gasquet and simon — has said that he has withdrawn due to personal reasons nytimes.com/athletic/7689095…

a fortnight ago, emma navarro detailed her health journey the past two years. her detail of her experience with red-s — a syndrome wrongly assumed to only affect endurance athletes — has widened a vital sports conversation free story from @avarwallace nytimes.com/athletic/7685873…

alcaraz in news conference: "I would say it was a really bad level for me, and it was a really good level from him"
alcaraz isn't playing well, bergs is peaking, the scoreline that ensues is not really a surprise

tommy paul is one of few players i've seen show the discipline to keep vacherot in a forehand cage, which just works, especially on a court with a bit of pace in it
FH-FH as much as possible, serve to FH / body as much as possible, deny Vacherot's FH line (which wants transition to BH BH) with slice line, transition out of BH BH with slice line to FH, keep BH BH exchanges as caged as possible

carlos alcaraz has mostly escaped from his own serve the past few weeks by using his outstanding first-serve return. unfortunately for him, zizou bergs was serving like a demon in shanghai monday night nytimes.com/athletic/7683747…

after a summer of collapse-on-back celebrations, zheng qinwen did it again at the china open, to rubber-stamp her climb back up the tennis ladder. then it was time for karaoke nytimes.com/athletic/7680131…

Spent a few weeks earlier this year roaming a Hollywood almost entirely reoriented around the production of “microdramas,” which are kind of like soap operas except they’re short and completely demented and optimized for your phone. Started as one kind of sad story and ended as another, differently sad kind of story. You can read it now in @NYTmag nytimes.com/2026/10/06/magaz…

playing every other day at the quarterfinal stage and then compressing semifinals and final into two days remains the stupidest thing about atp / wta 1000 scheduling (at the events that do it)

coco gauff told her team that she couldn't see the ball and felt like she was going to pass out during her loss to elise mertens at the china open. she was down 6-3, 4-1 at the time; it finished 6-3, 6-3 for mertens' first win over gauff in six tries nytimes.com/athletic/7667936…

There's so much we don't know much about Sinner's knee but I sure have trouble reflexively blaming the calendar. He (smartly!) played no AO lead-ins, 1 event in Feb, no clay 500s, no Wimbledon lead-ins. Nine events in 6.5 months. That's what a scaled back schedule looks like.

the medvedev incident is a clear default but also exposes how bad tennis has been on this in recent years. players have gotten away with far more aggressive actions purely because they've missed hitting anyone by pure luck
