Montgomery Square, the newest @eji_org Legacy Site, memorializes the Montgomery bus boycott and modern Civil Rights Movement. It is also a warning to all of us. I talked with Bryan Stevenson about memory, erasure, and what history demands for @GuardianUS. theguardian.com/us-news/2026…

On July 4, 18-year-old Nolan Wells had joined a group of friends on boats out to Horn Island, Mississippi where locals gathered to swim, fish, and party. Wells never made it back home. His body was found washed up on the island two days later. The last known photo of Wells showed him sitting on a boat next to three white friends. The story ricocheted around social media, fueled by suspicions that his death echoed Mississippi’s history of racist violence. It sparked conversations about the safety of Black people in predominantly white spaces. Some accused Wells’s white friends of murder; others blamed Wells’s family for inflaming racial tensions without proof his death was anything but an accident. In late September, a grand jury declined to issue any indictments for Wells’s death. By the time its findings were announced, locals said the attention on the tragedy had quieted down with no satisfying resolution about what happened. “I feel like Ocean Springs as a whole wants this to just go away,” said Wells’s mother, Christine Wells-Wonsley. But the questions surrounding what exactly happened to him on Horn Island have not gone away. Wells-Wonsley and Elmore Wonsley, Wells’s father, have held firm to their suspicions. They said they have not made any accusations against the boat boys, but they’ve noted inconsistencies among the accounts of those there that day. “It was never our intent to make this a racist thing,” Wells-Wonsley said. “We are just parents who want to know. But at the end of the day, unfortunately, you can’t erase Mississippi’s history. You can’t erase America’s history when we talk about racism.” Wells-Wonsley and Wonsley continue to advocate for a deeper investigation while managing a pain she has called “insurmountable.” At times, their pursuit of answers has felt all-consuming. “We are still stuck,” Wells-Wonsley said. “We’re stuck in grief. We’re stuck in questions.” Read Albert Samaha’s full report: nymag.visitlink.me/BsSEgU

Mara Gay (who went to college with El-Sayed) on Morning Joe: One thing you learn when you're not a white American is that it sometimes doesn't matter what you want to talk about. The more the Republicans try to make it about Islamophobia, the angrier voters appear to be getting because they want to talk about health care. They want to talk about why they can't afford their lives. He decided to run because he cares about Michiganders. I know that. He can be very stubborn. He also cares about people.

MUST-WATCH: "Until they drive prices UP... Americans aren't complaining right now that prices are too LOW." @AbdulElSayed masterfully schools Bari Weiss' CBS News(max) 60 minutes host @Douthat60 on the problem with living in corporatism, not capitalism -where monopolies and oligopolies reign supreme - and the importance of backing politicians who support the ability of labor UNIONS to push back so workers can earn more and live better lives... rather than politicians who are owned by corporations. You all can play dumb if you want to. They know that as long as they sell the narrative that Black and brown people are the ones committing fraud, that will make it easier to convince low-income white people — who are the largest recipients of these services — to vote against their own interests. It also generally encourages people to see these services only as tools of abuse and fraud. The meme wouldn’t be as effective if they used Brett Favre’s photo, would it?

What a betrayal. The US is not good to its word.

This story confirms pretty much everything I’ve ever thought about Pete Buttigieg.
JD Vance is like the opposite of Pete Buttigieg. Back when Pete was Mayor, a doctor recalled how Pete appeared out of nowhere and served as a translator for a family in the ER:

Mike Rogers is running the most racist campaign in the country and will be a vote to fund Trump’s internment camps. Supporting him in the name of concerns about bigotry is ludicrous.

It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota. To understand why this is so appalling, it’s important to know the facts. Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically. Congresswoman Omar went on to graduate from college, work as a community organizer, become the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S., and win a seat in Congress. There, she has been one of the Trump Administration’s fiercest critics, which has led the president to repeatedly single her out as someone who he believes does not belong in this country. Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen. Federal agents have raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone — all to try and uncover a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case. Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president. And it’s not the first time this has happened. Under President Trump, the Justice Department has repeatedly gone after those he considers his political enemies — from the Attorney General of New York, to the former head of the FBI, to members of the Federal Reserve. In those cases, the prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for having no basis in law, and the same is likely to happen in this case. But not before Congresswoman Omar’s life has been turned upside down, her legal bills have piled up, and she’s been forced to spend time fighting unsubstantiated charges instead of serving the people of Minnesota. The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views. Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.

As complete and direct an analysis I’ve heard on a panel. One element I’d love to see incorporated though is the economy of consumers’ leisure time and attention. Neither is infinite, which implies substantially more competition and more challenging economics on the supply side.
Ben Affleck says the day will come when someone can order up an episode of Succession with a plot they have in mind. He says that could create an extra revenue stream to replace lost DVD revenue. Affleck says AI isn’t going to end the film and TV business, but certain parts of the industry will be dramatically affected: “I wouldn’t like to be in the visual effects business. They’re in trouble because what costs a lot of money is now gonna cost a lot less….And maybe it shouldn’t take a thousand people to render something.” But he says the cost savings will mean more television programming, not less: “You might be able to get two seasons of House of the Dragon in a year instead of one.”

Truly disgusting what the Republican Party and parts of our media have normalized on this country. Just open naked racism and bigotry and mockery of minorities. Can you imagine a Muhammad or Abdullah in the schoolground getting bullied by kids who heard the president do it first?
Trump on El-Sayed: I’m the president. I can call you whatever the hell I want Muhammad. His name is actually Abdullahalalalala baa ba ba Muhammad El-Sayed. So his middle name is Muhammad. I was right.. almost.
