Blackstone CEO Stephen Schwarzman reveals how a 2015 bus ride with Jack Ma led to his firm being the world’s largest data center owner “We did see the whole AI revolution, and that's just because of an accident. When I was in China in 2015, sitting on a bus with Jack Ma, who is the founder of Alibaba, and he started talking about that.” “I literally had no idea what he was talking about, and he explained that this would be the most consequential technological change which would change the world.” “So I have a bunch of academic relationships, one of whom was the head of MIT. He said, ‘Jack's underselling this’. So I said, ‘how do you know?’ He said, ‘because we invented AI at MIT.’” “And we positioned the firm at Blackstone in this unique way where we bought a very large data center, a company, in 2021 for $10 billion. It's now 15 times larger.” “We're the largest owner of data centers in the world. That puts us in touch with the six hyperscalers, because we work for all of them. So we know what's happening almost everywhere in this ecosystem.”

Around 150,000 home owners with adjustable-rate mortgages (ARMs) are scheduled to face their first interest rate adjustment this year, according to ICE Mortgage Technology. Another 186,000 borrowers are scheduled for their first ARM rate reset in 2027, followed by 155,000 in 2028 - with nearly half a million American homeowners on the hook for an expensive financial reckoning over the next three years. @m3_melody #RealEstate dailymail.com/real-estate/ar…

"The incentive and ability to form economic clusters may be the single most important factor that explains why China’s cities have succeeded over the past three decades while America’s superstar cities have stagnated."
“China is not the world’s largest command economy. It is a continent-sized Silicon Valley.” Awesome piece by @RobinRivaton on China’s local governments and industrial clusters: worksinprogress.co/issue/chi…

Johnson County, Kansas is one of the most successful prime suburban counties out there, and maybe the only such place in the country that's a plausible rival to the central city. I need to get out there and check it out in person. kansascity.com/news/local/ar…

ADHD people are literally cognitive raccoons. Curious about everything, collecting random facts like contraband, solving problems nobody asked us to solve, and somehow forgetting why we walked into the room.

The most successful people I know are either militant about their time or super liberal with it. The first group audits their time down to the minute. “Why can’t this be an email” or “This meeting doesn’t need to be recurring” is a core part of their vernacular. They view wasted time as wasted potential, so the misuse of it makes them sick. The second group treats their time based on vibes. They carve out large chunks for unstructured brainstorming, knowledge sharing and relationship building. Life without serendipity and connecting that doesn’t feel transactional isn’t a life worth living. One group isn’t better or worse, and this distinction is more so ends of a spectrum vs. a binary switch, but really interesting to observe nonetheless.

A pretty striking example of what’s happening in Manhattan’s office market right now. And it's not just the newest buildings. 245 Park Ave, built in 1967, was struggling with vacancy after the pandemic. It was acquired out of bankruptcy in 2022. Following a major redevelopment, the 1.8m sq-ft tower has just reached 100% leased. Office leasing in Manhattan is the strongest it's been in 20 years.

The perfect ending for Justin Verlander. His daughter runs out to the mound and he walks off with his family. Feels like a movie.
