A 15-year-old has been arrested in connection with the shooting near FAMU that injured 12 people. This is heartbreaking on every level. Families are hurting, lives have been changed, and a young person is now facing serious consequences. We have a responsibility to teach our kids right from wrong, that actions have consequences, and that violence is never the answer. I commend the Tallahassee Police Department for their swift action and stand with law enforcement as they continue their investigation.

A parent asking what their child is being taught is doing their job. Schools should be able to answer without getting defensive or making families jump through hoops. Parents shouldn’t need a lawyer or a public records fight to find out what’s happening in their kid’s classroom.

Yesterday at UCF, I visited the Military and Veteran Student Success Center and met with student veterans alongside UCF board member Tom McNamara and @UCF_MVSS Director Michael Kepner. Through mentorship, career development and other resources, @UCF is helping veterans, service members and military families succeed in the classroom and beyond. Our veterans have already answered the call to serve. Kudos to UCF for leading in their support of veterans and their families.

A new VA contract with Volunteers of America Florida makes 18 existing beds in Gainesville free for eligible homeless veterans, with help accessing care, employment resources and permanent housing. Our law enforcement officers deserve the best tools to do their jobs. Today, I joined local leaders for the ribbon cutting of the new Ocoee Regional Law Enforcement Training Center. This much-needed facility will strengthen training, improve coordination between departments and better equip officers to protect our communities.
