So basically, today PHP got two critical bugs that let anyone run code on your server without even logging in, which is bad, and then the details leaked before the patch was even out, which is worse, and it works on WordPress and MediaWiki and Magento and Joomla and Laravel, and Censys says like 1.5 million servers are running a version with no fix, so the NSA was like "take your system offline," and the FBI was like "take your system offline," and CISA and the UK and CERT-EU were all like "take your system offline," and then the Prime Minister of Japan, the actual Prime Minister, posted at 5:55 in the morning telling 48.8 million people to take their system offline, so everyone took their system offline, like the Dutch cybersecurity agency took its own website offline, and the Dutch parliament went offline, and the Port of Rotterdam went offline, and Finland and France and Denmark started pulling government sites, and Wikipedia went down, and Archive.org went down, and Asana and GOG and Something Awful went down, and the University of Vienna's webmail went down for some reason, and that's just PHP. Because GitLab also dropped a CVSS 10.0, which is the highest score they give out, for a bug that's been there since 2014, so that's every self-hosted GitLab for twelve years, and then LiteLLM 1.107.0 got hijacked and shipped a credential stealer and a remote access trojan in every single wheel and the Docker images, including latest, and you didn't even have to import it, just installing it was enough, and it's the second time this year, and then Railway paused every deployment on the entire platform because someone got into the environment variables, so now everyone has to rotate every secret they've ever stored there, and TiDB Cloud said someone was walking around inside with stolen credentials for basically a month and an extortion group says they took 10.6 terabytes, and Zeabur got breached for the second time in two months and is just shutting down, like the whole company, and Node.js patched remote code execution and a TLS bypass, and CISA says Plex is being actively exploited, and someone took over 300 Tor exit relays to steal SSH passwords, and SafePay ransomware has hit over 600 critical infrastructure orgs, and India's biggest bank filed a data loss incident, and Japan has been in an official state of emergency in cyberspace since October 9, which honestly explains the 5:55 AM post. Oh, and eMudhra, a certificate authority that's issued over 60 million certificates, whose entire job is proving websites are who they say they are, was supposed to be using private keys that are random numbers over a hundred digits long, and one of them was 4. Just 4. And the others were like 66 and 237. Anyway, it's Wednesday.

🚨DEFCON 1🚨
In a few hours, a critical vulnerability that affects ~70% of web sites will be disclosed. It allows an attacker to upload and execute arbitrary code.
It's probably best if you stop browsing the internet for the rest of the week.
xitter.cf/ThePHPF/status/2112633…
The PHP security team is giving advance notice: Upcoming security release Wed, Oct 21st 2026, 14:00UTC, two critical vulnerabilities, both rated CVSSv4 9.2.
PHP users are encouraged to prepare to update. Earlier release if details become public or active exploit evidence.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
These are server-side PHP RCE vulnerabilities for which web hosts/admins should prepare to patch per official notice; general users face no direct need to stop browsing. PHP detected on ~69% of sites with known server-side language.

Pre-seed founders please stop making 5 year financial plans.
The world is changing so fast and so significantly, you simply do not need them.
Our bet is that you are able to adapt and change to new environments; not stick to a rigid plan.
Investors, asking for them, please stop. This isn’t 1999.
At pre-seed the people is all we have, anyone who focuses on the financial plan isn’t for you.

A new paper from Apple engineers ends with a line we couldn’t have written better ourselves:
"if idle macOS devices across organizations [...] can be securely federated, they could form a massive, shared GPU resource pool that benefits the broader ecosystem."
That’s what we’re building with Darkbloom.
The paper's Minions is a system that pool idle Apple Silicon Macs into a distributed GPU cloud for on-prem inference. Queue times went from 10+ hours to minutes. Zero new GPU purchases. Zero infrastructure cost.
It runs inside Apple, on coworkers’ Macs, using the company’s own storage and access controls. When a team needs more capacity, they Slack colleagues and ask them to turn on the executor. Even in that setting, the top adoption concern was data confidentiality. People were wary of their jobs running on a colleague’s Mac. Apple’s fix was to keep each team’s work on its own team’s machines.
Which brings it back to that one word in the conclusion: “securely.”
Inside a company, you can shrink the network until you trust everyone in it. On an open network, the machine belongs to a stranger and there’s no one to Slack. Keeping prompts private and outputs honest on hardware you don’t control is the hard problem that we solved at Darkbloom.
Apple built the on-prem version.
Darkbloom is the open one.
Everyone's watching the race for AI intelligence. John Romeo (CEO, Oliver Wyman Forum) makes the case that we're missing two bigger ones: the race for adaptation and the race for control.
→ "AI creates time. It creates capacity. But it doesn't automatically create value." Only 8% of organizations have a standard for what happens to the time AI saves — which is why so many pilots never hit the bottom line.
→ "Power follows permission." The moment we give an agent data, budget, and a mandate to act, we've created an economic actor — and the real battle shifts from human attention to machine permission.
→ Tim Berners-Lee's suggestion: give AI agents license plates. Identity, permission, accountability, revocability — so when something goes wrong, we know whose agent it was.
→ "We celebrated a machine making a move no human had conceived of [AlphaGo's move 37]... but what happens when move 37 comes to a financial market, or a military decision?"

I just asked a sr. engineer what his current agentic coding stack was.
Spoiler alert: saying that you do spec driven development but still prefer to hand-code isn’t the flex it used to be.

In 1995, doctors told a family to say goodbye.
Brielle was fading fast. At barely two pounds, her oxygen was plummeting, her skin was turning blue, and every machine in the ICU screamed that her tiny heart was giving up.
Then a nurse broke the rules.
Ignoring hospital protocol that strictly separated premature twins, she trusted instinct over machinery. She gently picked up Brielle’s stronger sister, Kyrie, and laid her into the same incubator. Two fragile bodies, side by side, just as they had grown together in the womb.
What happened next silenced the entire room.
Within minutes, the alarms stopped. Brielle’s oxygen levels surged. Her frantic pulse steadied, her ragged breathing slowed, and the warmth flooded back into her skin.
Then came the moment that brought veteran doctors to their knees: Kyrie slowly lifted her tiny, fragile arm and wrapped it entirely around her dying sister—anchoring her to this world.
That single embrace didn’t just save a life. It shattered standard medical protocol forever, pioneering the practice of "co-bedding" twins across neonatal units worldwide.
Science couldn’t save her that night. A sister’s touch did.
Never underestimate the power of simply refusing to let go.

When Rita Moreno appeared as a guest on The Muppet Show in 1976, she created one of the greatest musical comedy sketches in television history.
Attempting to perform the classic jazz piece "Fever" with charm and elegance, she faced her arch-nemesis: Animal the drummer.
What made this act a timeless masterpiece was Moreno's exceptional comedic talent.
Instead of being genuinely overshadowed, she used every annoyed glance, every calculated silence, and every explosive reaction to perfectly counter Animal's chaotic drumming.
Nearly 50 years later, this iconic confrontation remains a classic example of how a talented artist can transform high-level music into pure, unadulterated comedy. 👑😂
