Nuclear power is an investment that can benefit a country for generations. But financing new projects requires governments, developers, financial institutions, the private sector and long-term customers to work together. Excellent to be in London today for the @FT’s #FTEnergy Summit, where I highlighted how the @IAEAorg is helping countries prepare for nuclear power, and how our recent agreements with financial institutions, including the @WorldBankGroup, are opening new opportunities for investment. Important to meet 🇺🇦 @MFA_Ukraine’s @andrii_sybiha at #WSF2026 in Warsaw. Nuclear safety and security in Ukraine remain a priority for @IAEAorg. We’re working to secure new localized ceasefires in the vicinity of ZNPP. Previous seven such IAEA-brokered ceasefires helped secure off-site power for the ZNPP and avoided a nuclear or radiological accident. We also looked at additional support to minimize risks to Ukraine’s energy sector.

Presented @IAEAorg’s 2025 Annual Report to the @UN General Assembly #UNGA in New York. At a time when conflict and growing divisions are testing international cooperation, the IAEA continues its indispensable work for peace and development. Some highlights of our work include: - Non-proliferation: conducting nearly 3,000 in-field verification activities, including work that led to the resolution of outstanding questions concerning Syria’s past nuclear activities. - Nuclear safety and security in Ukraine: we have maintained an uninterrupted presence at all nuclear facilities, conducted 287 missions, and I have negotiated 8 ceasefires between the two belligerents to enable critical repairs at ZNPP. - Health: our #RaysOfHope, now joined by more than 100 countries, is expanding access to life-saving cancer care one community at a time, and we are strengthening pandemic preparedness in 129 countries through ZODIAC. - Food security: we are tackling hunger and boosting food security through #Atoms4Food with @FAO, in a partnership that spans 46 countries. - Plastic pollution: 180 institutions from 110 countries are working together to beat plastic pollution and improve monitoring through #NUTECplastics. The world is fractured, but progress continues in the patient work of peace, security and development. A robust global nuclear security regime is essential. Any State could be affected by an act of nuclear terrorism, and a strong international legal framework is fundamental to preventing nuclear material from being used to cause harm. Today, I addressed the Preparatory Committee for the 2027 Conference of the Amendment to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material A/CPPNM - the only legally binding agreement in the area of physical protection of nuclear material and facilities. The work starts now to lay the foundations for a successful conference next April and ensure the Convention remains fit for purpose.

Safeguards are at the heart of @IAEAorg’s work to ensure nuclear material remains in peaceful use. And as nuclear grows, so does the need for the next generation of safeguards professionals. Great to meet this year’s trainees, from countries across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and the Pacific. Many will go on to work in safeguards and the nuclear field back home. Wishing them every success.
