“We are all made in the image of God,” says JD Vance, “and I certainly try to live that principle as a public official.” Right. And I’m Pope Leo. My latest column, on the VP outdoing even his boss in slurs. washingtonsun.com/perspectiv…

“Every relevant medical society recommends against screening asymptomatic men for testosterone deficiency, because it is akin to scouring a hotel room with a black light: you’re going to find a lot of stuff of indeterminate significance that you wish you hadn’t seen.” I wrote about Pete Hegseth’s testosterone obsession for The New Yorker newyorker.com/science/annals…

I've researched this deeply and written about it in my column. It affects my life because I've been a smoker since birth. It took me 14 years to get my hands on cigarettes and then 30 years to switch to safe vaping. Sally Satel @slsatel ⬇️ is one of the smartest intellectuals you'll find on a variety of issues including transplants. I adore her.😍 People find it hard to measure risk: They see smoke or vapor and think it's all the same thing. It is not. @jgitchell

Brilliant
Chris Rock just nailed one of the biggest problems with wokeness. Helping people who feel marginalized is good. He says so himself. The trouble starts when a good cause becomes an institution. The first few witches were real. Then you open a witch office. Now there are salaries, budgets and pensions to justify, and the office needs a steady supply of witches to keep existing. That’s the trap. Once a cause becomes a career, solving the problem means losing your job. So the problem never gets solved. It just keeps getting redefined. A system built to find wrongdoing will keep finding it, whether it’s there or not.

Ten years of ping-pong between the Trump and Biden versions of economic populism have left voters angrier than ever — maybe it’s time to try Ideas That Actually Achieve The Desired Goals.
Me in the NYT: If the cost of living is voters' number one concern maybe it's time to bring the 1990s-style policies (none dare call it neoliberalism) — progressive deficit reduction, free trade, regulatory reform — that would actually fix it. nytimes.com/2026/10/16/opini…

It's college football season, which means it's time to settle America's greatest rivalries. But forget touchdowns. We're measuring something even more important: FREE SPEECH. Using @theFIREorg’s 2027 rankings, let's see who's winning the First Amendment Bowl.

Organizations compete for the brightest minds. We say we value intelligence at work. But do we value it equally? A 2026 study found that women with higher cognitive ability faced greater negative interpersonal consequences than men. The same competence that earns recognition for men may carry social penalties for women. How much human potential do organizations undermine when competence challenges gender expectations?
Women with high cognitive ability face "detrimental interpersonal ramifications" at work Men do not. The theory is that smarter women violate perceived social role expectations leading them to face backlash that men do not receive psycnet.apa.org/doiLanding?d…

I've had the pleasure of getting to know @johncleese, whose Life of Brian famously mocked religious dogma. Now someone's reported him to Britain's counterterrorism program for criticizing Islam. I suspect even Monty Python would have rejected this plot as too absurd. xitter.cf/glukianoff/status/2049…
Before Monty Python's "Life of Brian" became a classic, @JohnCleese told me it was radioactive. No studio wanted to touch it. Enter George Harrison, who had the means, taste, and spine to make sure it existed. Free expression and comedy need that courage.

I chatted with Rob Sand about his work as a prosecutor and whether it helps inform his approach on the campaign trail. If 'America the Beautiful' is his opening statement, what follows is an argument meant to appeal to a potentially skeptical jury pool. desmoinesregister.com/story/…
