@FryRsquared @AdamRutherford "Banana-flavored candy was not intended to mimic the taste of a formerly popular variety of banana. The reason banana candy tastes different from bananas is that it is mainly flavored with only one of the many flavors a banana has, isoamyl acetate."
From Wikipedia's list of common misconceptions. Gros Michel bananas do have more isoamyl acetate though, so they do taste more like the artificial flavour. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o…

Britain’s grim winter of strikes, falling incomes and a worsening NHS crisis is not some unfortunate series of events
It’s the inevitable result of a decade of Tory austerity that steadily weakened the state’s capacity to respond to shocks

In 1970, there were still around 20,000 capercaillie in Scotland.
The latest survey suggests as few as 542 birds remain.
What has happened?
The answer is by no means black and white.

Phenomenal. Bar-tailed Godwit has broken its own record: a first-year bird (five months old!) has flown 13,560 km—just shy of the direct flight limit of a Boeing 787—from Alaska to Tasmania, seemingly non-stop, in just 11 days (avg. speed: c.51 km/hr).

So @AdamRutherford is receiving a lot of skepticism about his tweet saying that if Cheddar Man has any genealogical ancestors today, he is the common ancestor of all present-day humans. Adam is correct about this — I think this is such a cool finding, so I'll explain it below.

Born this summer in southwest Finland, this juvenile Honey Buzzard's life came to a sudden end last Saturday, illegally shot in Malta.
This bird was part of a study on migration and was followed from its birth to its death.

"How sad on this October day,
To see our hedges shorn away.
Small creatures would have liked to eat,
The hawthorn berries, rose hips sweet,
Blackberries & nuts & sloes,
But through the blades the banquet goes.
Won't somebody heed our words,
And leave the berries for the birds."😢

So there we have it. It is confirmed that Scotland is snow-free yet again. The last patch, the Sphinx, disappeared sometime in the last 24 hours. The Sphinx has now vanished four times in the last six years, having done so only five times in the last 300 years. (1/2)

In 2012, the Spey Catchment Initiative implemented a project to restore the Allt Lorgy, lowering floodbanks and allowing the burn to find its own natural course.
