The myth Alberta 'subsidizes' the rest of Canada is the most powerful meme in the separatist armoury. But it's utterly false. I show that most Albertans get more back from federal programs than they personally pay in federal taxes, for @TheTyee: thetyee.ca/Opinion/2026/09/1… #abpoli /2

Instead, he reminded Canadians that our wallets have power.

Fall morning in St. John’s looking toward the Narrows of the Harbour. This was one of those sunrises where the sky just kept getting better as the light came up.I liked the way the fall leaves and branches framed the view looking toward the Narrows and houses along the hillside.

US subsidizes dairy yet uses Canadian stumpage system as excuse for massive levies on Cdn lumber, even tho 3rd party panels rejected argument this was subsidy. US dairy comes into Canada free of duty. I’m tired of hearing about dairy from US negotiators

My latest, on Canada as outlier: the only country in the G7, and one of very few in the OECD, in which the far right is not a serious political player. Pierre Poilievre deserves some of the credit, although Jamil Jivani may be about to change that. theglobeandmail.com/opinion/…

here's a plot of US trade balance for 2000-June 2026 in automotive sector compiled from monthly US data, showing the major trading groups: Canada, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, EU and Other.
It is impossible to look at this data and arrive at the conclusion that Canada is the problem.
There are long-term large structural automotive trade deficits with EU and Japan, and now South Korea. All three groups are large automotive exporters with virtually no imports. There's an obvious reason why they didn't retaliate to US tariffs: why bother? they don't import any US automotive anyway.
The big structural change in past 25 years has been the development of an enormous Mexican surplus in automotive. Mexico imports of US automotive are minute in comparison to their exports, so, once again, why bother retaliating.
Canada, on the other hand, is a very large importer of US automotive - the largest in the world. Its automotive industry is integrated with the Michigan industry. Both are adversely impacted by the huge Mexican export trade.
But whatever else this data shows, it doesn't show that Canada is "ripping off" anybody.
