John's friend, the Australian whistleblower David McBride, was freed on parole today after serving jail time for revealing wrongdoing. How delighted John would have been to see David reunited with his 'great mutt' Jake. Like his countryman Julian Assange, David McBride is another modern hero.
John's estate is delighted to announce that the first John Pilger Scholarship at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia, goes to Maddie Fuller.
John wished to encourage young journalists to serve the public, not media proprietors, and tell stories that others might prefer left untold.
"My passion for storytelling comes from a desire to give people a voice," says Maddie. "I believe journalism has the power to inform, inspire and connect communities. I hope to honour the spirit of the Scholarship through my future work as a journalist and by giving back to my community wherever possible."
Congratulations, Maddie.
You can bid for a box set of John's DVDs and some of his important journalism, donated by his estate, in an auction organised by the Information Rights Project
