There are times when I ask myself whether I’m being a bit too hard on my employer when I accuse it of grotesque breaches of impartiality.
And then I hear interviews like this.
It’s absolutely staggering that Karen Dalziel, the senior BBC editor responsible for Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, can talk about the very definition of a woman as though it’s some endlessly shifting, contested concept.
During an interview with Ros Atkins (who actually does his job properly), marking 80 years of Woman’s Hour, Dalziel is asked about the Supreme Court ruling which established that the words woman and sex in the Equality Act refer to biological sex.
Her response is revealing. She talks about the story moving, about how a legal judgment that settles something at one point is, for many people, merely a beginning. She even invokes the history of women getting the vote, as though the biological definition of a woman is another chapter in some great unfolding struggle for equality.
Think about the offensive absurdity of this.
For most of the 80 years that Woman’s Hour has been broadcasting, the meaning of the word woman was perfectly well understood. Yet here we are, celebrating that anniversary, with the programme’s own editor apparently treating that biological reality as something endlessly open to reinterpretation, rather than a fact that should underpin the programme’s coverage.
Giving equal weight to the proposition that any man who declares himself a woman thereby becomes one is not a neutral, impartial position. It’s an ideological one.
Dalziel isn’t finished though, and keeps digging. She suggests Woman’s Hour listeners are too old to “understand the terminology”. Presumably, these daft old bats are holding onto the quaint, hopelessly unfashionable idea that a woman isn’t a costume or a feeling but a biological reality. If only their befuddled brains could catch up with the enlightened metropolitan consensus!
It absolutely enrages me listening to this.
Because this is how the BBC has been hollowed out from within. By people in influential editorial positions so ideologically captured or cowardly that they can no longer distinguish between impartial journalism and progressive orthodoxies.
The BBC cannot restore its reputation for impartiality while people who mistake ideological conformity for editorial balance occupy senior positions.
Until they’re removed, every last one of them, all the BBC’s grand declarations about impartiality aren’t worth the paper they’re written on.

Just as most men aren't rapists, voyeurs or domestic abusers, so there are plenty of trans women who pose no risk to women and girls.
However, some trans-identified men provably are a risk. We know this because it's a matter of public record. Trans women have been convicted of all the crimes listed above, and of femicide.
No study has ever proven that trans-identified men don't have the same pattern of criminality as every other kind of man. All available evidence points the other way: they are just as likely as any other man to be a rapist or a woman-killer. The evidence is plain to see in government statistics and court reports, however much you'd like to pretend none of those exist.
Demanding that women and girls pretend there is no risk to themselves, which you do constantly, is itself abusive. Your insistence that you belong in women-only spaces, and your pretence that the likelihood of harm to females in those spaces doesn't increase with every man who's allowed inside, mark you out as precisely the kind of man who should be nowhere near women's and girls' locker rooms.
Decent men, however they identify, respect women's boundaries. Even if they themselves would never dream of harming a girl or woman, they are under no illusions about what some of their fellow men will do if given access to spaces where women and girls are undressed or otherwise vulnerable.
As for women who commit terrible crimes: I have literally never heard any woman deny that Myra Hindley, Karla Homolka or Joanna Dennehy are female. Nor have I ever seen a woman argue that being a woman entitles them to enter spaces reserved for vulnerable people, without having a professional or family-related reason for being there.
Yet another difference between women and trans-identified men of your type is that the former aren't demanding, en masse, the right to go where they clearly don't belong - for instance, into a nursery where they have neither a child nor a job, or onto an intensive care ward when they know nobody and have no medical qualifications, purely because they consider themselves to be especially kind and nurturing. Even if such an interloper didn't hurt a child or a critically ill person, women as a class understand how inappropriate it would be to push themselves into those spaces and just how much justified disquiet they'd cause by doing so.
The entitlement and disregard you show for the feelings and boundaries of women and girls are of those of an unfortunately all-too-common type of male. You believe you have the right to demand that women sacrifice their own personal safety to validate your feelings about yourself. You're either indifferent to the fact that you might make women and girls uneasy at best, and scared at worst, or you're well aware that you'll have that effect, and the thought gives you a thrill. Nothing about that makes you a woman. On the contrary, you just keep proving, over and over again, that you are a man.

You have to hand it to Samantha Niblett: she is at least consistent in demonstrating just how intellectually inflexible gender ideology can become.
Her position appears to have grown out of compassion for somebody she knew when she was young. But compassion is not a substitute for interrogating the reasons why somebody might come to believe they were “born in the wrong body” - or the other possible motives that might drive a man to dress as a woman.
More importantly, she seems unwilling to grapple seriously with the clash of rights that arises if you believe that any man who identifies as a woman should automatically be treated as one in every context.
True to her tribe, Niblett invokes “kindness” and “compassion”, with the implication that those who disagree with her somehow possess neither. She has also presented herself as an unwavering trans ally. But declaring that your position will never change, regardless of future evidence or arguments, is the definition of narrow-minded ideological thinking.
What strikes me most is how little intellectual development there appears to have been from the “compassionate” instinct Niblett describes having when she was young. The world is more complicated than simply dividing people into the kind and the unkind, the allies and the bigots.
There is something troublingly infantile about her reasoning and yet, somehow, she is an MP. What does this say about the state of the Labour Party, and the health of British politics more generally?
One of my personal highlights from Labour Party conference was speaking at @Lab4TransRights rally, where I explained how my being a trans ally far pre-dates me being in the Labour Party, pre-dates me even voting Labour, pre-dates me even being old enough to vote.

Natalie, your party has become a cult. The fact that you’re defending this reveals just how intellectually captured you’ve become.
There is nothing respectful about drawing up an Orwellian list of what people can and cannot say. It is the opposite of inclusive.
Your party’s policies on gender undermine women’s rights and safeguards and expose vulnerable children to harm. Read the Cass Review. We have subjected children to experimental, Frankenstein medicine while vulnerable adolescent girls are encouraged to believe they were born in the wrong body.
There will be a reckoning over this dystopian chapter at some point in the future. And when the full consequences of gender ideology are understood, I believe you and your party will be buried in ignominy for having championed it.

The “brain-sex hypothesis of gender dysphoria” has been possibly one of the most prominent scientific hypothesis for more than 30 years. Since its inception, a number of studies have been presented as "evidence" in its support, contributing to a mainstream and popular narrative that it is largely “settled science.”
However, a number of researchers and scholars (myself included) have raised methodological concerns, including inappropriate or inadequate control groups, questionable statistical approaches, small samples, and important confounding variables that complicate interpretation of the original findings.
Critiquing these studies has nevertheless become contentious. Scientific criticism of the brain-sex hypothesis is sometimes interpreted as criticism of transgender people themselves, or characterised as “transphobic” or “bigoted.” But these are fundamentally different claims.
A hypothesis about the neurobiological basis of gender dysphoria should be open to the same level of scrutiny as any other scientific hypothesis. Questioning whether the available evidence supports a particular explanation is not, in itself, an attack on the people that hypothesis seeks to explain.
Criticising a hypothesis is NOT the same thing as criticising a group of people.

Perhaps I missed it @MattChorley, but seeing as your guest mentioned a trans woman at the Lib Dems conference just now, why aren’t you talking about the fact that Davey and co have decided to put the rights of men who identify as women ahead of the rights of actual women?
This is a massive issue. I’m sure you’ve seen plenty of comments on here, but it feels like the subject is being avoided because the BBC has taken sides on this issue.
I realise I might have missed some searing in-depth examination you have given of the Lib Dems’ disastrous policy in this area but, if not, when are you going to address this issue?
John Simmonds retweeted
If you're seriously considering voting for the Liberal Democrats, you must watch this.
@EdwardJDavey says he doesn't agree with @jk_rowling on the trans issue. This puffed-up patronising prat goes on to explain how he's “patiently” listened to his constituents who do agree with Rowling - because it goes without saying that one needs patience to listen to people who believe in biology as opposed to ideology…
And Davey generously shows the mindset of progressive cultists, because he conflates equality for cross-dressing men with racism and homophobia.
But Davey, a man with a brain the size of an amoeba’s toothpick, doesn’t grasp that gender ideology creates a conflict of rights.
Should men with penises be allowed into spaces reserved for biological women? Davey says “yes” to this.
Should children who are confused about their sexuality be told, “I'm sorry, but you can't change your sex. It's biologically and medically impossible, and if we just leave you to grow up and give you love and support, you'll be all right. You might be gay, but that's okay.”
Well, Davey appears to be on the side of those who say, “No. Let's trans away the gay.” Because, be under no illusion, that's what's happening, and Davey seems to be fine with that.
Just watching this man interviewed is like witnessing the thickest person I remember from school being questioned about anything requiring even the shallowest level of intellectual curiosity.
You can see the confusion in his eyes. He's saying not what he believes, or has thought about, or has considered, but what he knows he has to say, because his party has got itself into an awful muddle over these issues.
The Lib Dems no longer stand for women's rights. They stand for the rights of men who dress as women. They put the rights and demands of those men higher on their priority list than the rights of women.
And any woman who says, “Hell no, I want my hard-won sex-based rights,”Davey will listen to you “patiently” and then reject your views.
The end of the political career of this staggeringly stupid man cannot come soon enough.

A landmark Finnish study has found a sharp rise in psychiatric illness among adolescents following sex-alteration procedures.
The peer-reviewed study, published in Acta Paediatrica, tracked every young person under 23 who contacted Finland's gender clinics between 1996 and 2019.
A total 2,083 individuals were studied, with 16,643 matched controls. They were followed for up to 25 years.
Finland's health registers are mandatory, which means no one opts out — this is the complete national picture.
The numbers: psychiatric morbidity rose from 9.8% to 60.7% in adolescents who underwent feminising reassignment, and from 21.6% to 54.5% in masculinising reassignment.
Even after adjusting for prior psychiatric history, gender-referred adolescents faced five times the risk of male population controls, and three times the risk of female controls.
"Psychiatric needs do not subside after medical gender reassignment," the authors concluded.
Referrals after 2010 arrived sicker. 47.9% had already needed psychiatric treatment before their first clinic visit, against 15.3% among controls.
The authors' read: for some adolescents, gender distress may be secondary to other mental health challenges.
The evidence keeps mounting. The silencing continues anyway.
How many more adolescents will be told this is "care"?

I’m just catching up with the Laura Kuenssberg programme from yesterday, and it’s absolutely making my blood boil.
Bridget Phillipson was asked about the Piddington situation, and rather than address the fact that hundreds of unvetted men are going to be dumped on the doorstep of that village - men often from countries with cultures so regressive that the government feels it necessary to distribute leaflets among them telling them not to rape women - she instead pivots to a wider debate about misogyny within society and domestic violence.
These are very serious subjects, but they don’t address the fact that if women face danger from men in our society, then surely adding hundreds of unvetted men into the mix isn’t going to help.
Rishi Sunak is then mentioned after the former PM wrote an article expressing concern that we’re at risk of becoming a society where nationality is conflated with skin colour. Bridget Phillipson is then allowed to sound off about racism without acknowledging that uncontrolled immigration undermines social cohesion. She also talks about being of Irish stock, as if immigration from all countries and cultures is the same, when it plainly isn’t.
And all the while, unfortunately, because the BBC is very much on the progressive page, there is very little pushback against any of this.
The modern Labour movement refuses to acknowledge that an Eritrean or Afghan man clambering off a boat in Kent, who may be a criminal for all we know because he is completely unvetted, and who comes from a culture where women have precious few rights, may potentially present a different level of risk from a man raised in this country.
And if there is an increasing problem in this country with misogyny and violence against women, we have no idea how much changing demographics may have played into that, because the government and the police deliberately withhold information that could give us a much clearer idea of what factors are contributing to this awful trend.
All around us, we seem to be ruled over by people who are willing to gaslight us to the ends of the earth rather than tell us the whole truth.

I see that Stella Creasy is accusing me of leading a pitchfork mob against her, because I opined that she is less likeable and more hypocritical than the wild parakeet she mistook for an escaped pet.
For those who don’t know, Creasy is an elected politician and self-proclaimed ‘old-fashioned feminist’ who is ‘still fighting the patriarchy’. She’s more than once publicly defined herself against me (and my reaction was not to accuse her of leading a mob, even though I was probably averaging a dozen death threats a day at the point when the article below appeared.)
I thought it might be instructive for those of us who don’t share Creasy’s brand of ‘feminism’ to examine her campaigning record, so we can learn to do better.
Creasy wants women admitted to the male-only, exclusive, London-based private members Garrick Club, a change that would benefit rather privileged women like Creasy. Creasy is a mother who wants better accommodations for working mothers, a change that would benefit Creasy. Creasy takes selfies at a men-only Muslim march because that reminds everyone how non-racist she is, which benefits Creasy. Creasy asserts that ‘trans women are women’, which keeps her in good odour with her party’s most aggressive activists, and benefits Creasy.
However, keeping cross-dressing heterosexual men out of nurses’ changing rooms doesn’t benefit Creasy, because Creasy has never had to mop up other people’s piss, blood and vomit at work. Challenging the notion that a male basketball player becomes a girl if he says he is doesn’t benefit Creasy, who has no sporting ambitions. Speaking up against the patriarchy as practised by non-white men doesn’t benefit Creasy, who wants those selfie-opportunities. Criticising an ideological movement that persecutes, harasses and openly threatens women who don’t believe some women have penises wouldn't benefit Creasy, because she's already fully-signed up to self-id, where any man who says he's a woman must be taken at his word.
As the late Gloria Steinem said: ‘“Feminism has never been about getting a job for one woman. It's about making life more fair for women everywhere.’
Creasy the patriarchy-challenger is provably more than happy to cosy up to men and misogynist movements when it suits her public profile and career advancement, no matter the harms those men might be causing less privileged women. By Steinem’s definition, what Stella espouses is not feminism, but Creasyism, and I suggest the emblem for this brave new rights movement should be an indignant parakeet with severely ruffled feathers.
