Three weeks ago I wrote that Fairford was most likely an Iranian operation, and that it was probably designed to be stopped.
Fairford was important to the US war effort against Iran. B-1s and B-52s had been flying strike missions from there since March. It was one of only two bases in Europe they could use, because Spain, France, Italy and Germany had all refused. In July the IRGC publicly named it a legitimate target.
For Iran this was an efficient way to apply pressure. A successful attack that destroyed US aircraft or killed US personnel would have invited a military response. A plot that is stopped short of the wire carries almost no risk. The men involved are British, hired locally and expendable, and Iran can deny any connection, which it has done. No Iranian officers were exposed, and the cost was a few vans, some petrol and whatever the men were paid. The message still got through: keep letting US bombers fly from here, and this is what you can expect. After the IRGC’s public threat in July, there was no doubt who was sending it.
Today two of the men were re-arrested under the National Security Act on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service. Police have confirmed the country is Iran, say state involvement is “highly likely,” and are examining “the ambition behind it.”
The evidence points to this being a warning rather than a serious attempt at sabotage. The vans carried petrol but no explosives, and the men were stopped short of the perimeter. The Telegraph reports that Israeli intelligence had warned MI5 of an imminent Iranian-backed attack on the base, which would explain why the police seemed to be expecting them.
A week later every US bomber had left Fairford. Iran got what it wanted, at almost no cost.
How will the #IranWar end? Can there be #peace in the #MiddleEast? I have a formula, but you may not like it.
There no straight lines in nature.

Excellent analysis and discussion of the aftermath of the RAF Fairford incident.
Two weeks ago I wrote that the incident at RAF Fairford was most likely an Iranian operation. I also wrote that it was probably designed to be stopped, because its purpose was to send a message: keep letting American bombers fly from Fairford, and this is what you can expect.
On the first point, Prime Minister Andy Burnham told Parliament yesterday that the plot was “highly likely to have been coordinated in Iran, almost certainly directed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard.” Twenty-nine countries, including the US, signed a joint statement backing that assessment, and the UK has sanctioned two Iranians, one of them the head of IRGC counterespionage.
The evidence also supports the second point. Police found petrol in the vans but no explosives. One of the men reportedly dialled 999 himself before the arrests. Police were alerted to suspicious vans almost an hour before the farmer called, and President Trump has said US and UK intelligence had the suspects “under view for a long time.” All seven men arrested have been released on bail, and none has been charged. None of this fits a serious attempt to destroy aircraft. It does fit an operation meant to be caught within sight of the wire, so the threat was obvious and no one was hurt.
American bombers had been flying strike missions against Iran from Fairford since March, and it was one of only two bases in Europe available to them, because Spain, France, Italy and Germany had all said no. In July the IRGC publicly named Fairford as a legitimate target.
The plan worked. A week after the arrests, the US pulled every bomber off the base and flew them home. I expected the warning to be aimed at the new British government, but in the end it was Washington that acted on it.
Tehran achieved this at almost no cost. No one was killed, the men involved are British, and Iran has denied everything. It has shown that it can reach into Britain through local proxies and affect where the US bases its aircraft. Other countries hosting American bombers will have noticed

Should we expect to see a spike in attempted aircraft #hijackings by pilots like the #FlyDubai incident? What if attackers use #AI to plan instead of the #terror cells of old?

I agree with one Youtube commenter who said this is the best analysis on the internet. I'm not biased of course.
We break down the suspected terror plot near RAF Fairford & whether Iran may have been behind it, plus the latest standoff over Hormuz, China’s role in supporting the IRGC, pressure on Saudi/Gulf allies, & whether nukes are even on the table anymore.

The #Houthis asked for help & the U.S. gave it. The #Saudis asked for help & the U.S. denied it. Why?
There is more to the story than just #Iran.
