ALT The Major Active Faulting of Afghanistan (red lines from the Global Earthquake Model Active Fault Database) overlaid on mosaic satellite imagery (GoogleEarth) shows the tectonics dominated by the large strike-slip faults of Herat and Chaman which run close to major population centres of Herat and Kabul (white circles).

ALT Image generated from satellite radar showing the offsets from the 2021 May Qinghai earthquake indicating where the fault rupture broke the surface and offset the ground by a couple of metres. The fault rupture is almost 160 km long, and is a single trace along most of its length except in the East where there are two strands.
