Our political class is refusing to act.
The M4 carries about 43 million vehicles a year.
However, near the Brynglas Tunnels in Newport there is endless congestion.
The tunnels opened in 1967 and were built for 30,000 vehicles a day.
Today, nearly 120,000 vehicles go through them.
They've had to implement a permanent 50mph speed limit to help manage the congestion.
But, the solution is there: an M4 relief road south of Newport.
Naturally, it has taken over 35 years of debating to go... nowhere.
Nothing has been done.
Three governments have created plans… just to drop them completely.
£15 million went on buying 29 homes along the route before it was cancelled.
And £135 million has been spent in total.
Our political class has created a system that does not build. They make fixing issues – big and small – seem impossible.
Whether it’s potholes, nuclear power, trains or tunnels, they’ve repeatedly failed to act to fix Britain.
We need to change our planning system, and our culture so that we prioritise getting stuff done – and making sure it works. No more excuses. No more delays
We cannot afford to be arguing for over 35 years over a road. It is yet another symbol of decline.
We can do better. We can build the solution. Our politicians must choose to ACT, rather than yet more reviews & consultations.
What do you think?

Have gone full Covid-era Autocar shoot this week with a trip to the simply unbelievable Valley of Rocks. Particularly enjoyed the fact that I could just about make out home, 26 miles away across the Bristol Channel - magical place

‘We make it real,’ says Maserati. ‘100% AI-generated film,’ Maserati also says. If they’re cutting corners on marketing, what else are they skimping on. This is exceptionally poor.

I don’t want to "download the app" to pay for parking. I don’t want to "create an account" to see a menu. I don’t want to "provide feedback" on a 30-second interaction. I just want to exist in the physical world without a digital leash.

Alternatively you could have just put a railway line across the land, had it finished a decade ago and extended it past Inverness for a fraction of the cost.
A prime example of the UK's inability to deliver critical infrastructure in an even semi-sensible way
The last of over 5,000 reinforced concrete segments has been lifted into position for the Chipping Warden 'green tunnel' - marking a major milestone for one of the longest 'cut and cover' tunnels on the project 👇🎥.
Set to stretch for one-and-a-half miles, the tunnel is being built inside a cutting, with the earth put back on top afterwards, helping to blend the high-speed railway into the landscape and cut noise and disturbance for people living nearby.

Sorry, but this is nonsense.
HS2 became such an over budget and delayed mess precisely because communities were listened to. Tunnels had to be built, nimbys took control. It’s the planning rules which stop anything in the UK.
Replying to @tomhfh
Burnham says the problem with HS2 was "a remote bureaucracy which always wanted to cut costs", and not "listening to the people whose areas it will affect".
