The “most secure” [choose your favorite overhyped product] talk heard over decades has been complete bunk. Developers know that all software has bugs. People have been too easily convinced otherwise for a long time. This is a much deserved dose of humility.
Oh look, it's that time of the day again. teapawt.org/TheHackersNews/status/…

P2Poolv2 update: Uncle work is now accounted for in the chain work calculations. It took us a while to get to it, but it's done now. Will need to reset our testnet4 chain with the new release. Next up: electrum API support on every node.

One cannot imagine the work that went in to creating a performant FAIL STOP and RECOVERABLE full node. Years of prototyping, dead ends, and then 5 years ago the breakthrough that led us straight here. libbitcoin.info/database/ind…

Just like any other pool, Ocean can be targeted by regulators to enforce template selection. Ocean has complete control over payouts and share accounting, a centralized point of failure. Don't mislead people by telling them it's decentralized.

v0.16.2 ships with DNS seed support. No more manual peer discovery — new nodes bootstrap automatically. One less friction point between miners and self-sovereignty.

The latest open weight models run laps around frontier models for cyber security. It’s not that the frontier models are dumb, it’s that they explicitly gimp what they share, hiding the demons in the code. The why does not matter. Protect yourself. Run open models.

Bitchat is now the nr 1 social app in the French app store. Bitchat is a messenger that uses peer-to-peer mesh to communicate with others without the internet.

all locks are broken, so you first rob the bank. that’s why bitcoin was burning a month ago. and why it was critical to patch our systems quickly before the fire spreads to the rest of the world.

this, but security bugs instead of ants
If you find two ants in your kitchen, the best estimate of the total number of ants in your kitchen is not two

Bitcoin finally gets a fact-checker. @ProofOfKeags is working on BTC-verified, which formally verifies bitcoin’s protocol rules. His new fuzzing harness links the formal model to libbitcoinkernel so the two can be checked against each other. Next up: modeling script semantics.

Replying to @stevenroose3 @lopp
I thought about tweaking a node to only activate a new chain tip if it has non-min-difficulty. If you point significant tn4 hash rate at a node with that policy, you get a more stable chain, with lower difficulty, without a soft fork or consensus instability, I think.

Hell yeah, I just got some bitaxes and doubled the p2poolv2 hashrate on testnet4! Because testnet4 is kinda broken and under attack (not looking at anyone @lopp), the pool only finds a block about once a month which is kinda sad. Anyone got some spare hash and wants to join??

a break of elliptic curve discrete logarithm fundamentally demolishes the consensus layer of proof of stake chains whereas it merely compromises the state layer of proof of work chains

The 4th round of SIGMOD 2027 has *659* submissions. This is 2-3x more than previous years! I downloaded the abstracts & compared against last 10yrs of SIGMOD/VLDB papers. I then evaluated them to see how writing changed since ChatGPT in 2022. Many papers are clearly LLM written.

Extremely bullish on this! Mining decentralization is vital for bitcoin's long-term survival!
Kulpreet Singh (@jungly) is building p2poolv2, a decentralized mining pool. Pools are one of bitcoin’s last big points of centralization, and p2poolv2 nixes the operator entirely, letting miners coordinate peer to peer and make payouts without middlemen.
