Sony could continue to print discs from here until eternity and still turn a profit. The cost isn’t a factor: they would still make money. They’re choosing to kill discs because they want to make 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 money and this allows them to stomp out the resale market to do so.

The price differential between the physical and digital market is always going to be the smoking gun behind this pivot, despite what their internal metrics show. I’m not naive enough to assume Sony is my friend, but I like to do business with a company that respects my choice.

That isn’t to say that their metrics are not valid. I DO believe digital has overtaken physical media. But so long as a resale market exists that can undercut their digital distribution model they will have an imperative to crush it, and any rationale is catered to that end.

What Sony seems unwilling or incapable of understanding re: physical discs is that the money you “lose” is in fact money reinvested into the brand. That $15 copy of Spider-Man for the PS4 Billy picks up is a potential customer FOR LIFE who will support you well into the future.

This article is the equivalent of saying that you love using utensils to eat food but you hate the fork because it’s ergonomically unpleasant and can potentially poke you in the mouth. Your gripes with discs themselves do not preempt their importance in both form or function nor
