When the clerk asked for the $13 fee, the man didn’t have the money—so the officer reached for his own wallet to pay. In the end, the clerk kindly waived the fee. Then, Officer Spottswood drove the man to the bank to get a new debit card, and to the CATS station to help him get a new bus pass. After that, he took the man to get something to eat, since he was tired and hungry. Officer Spottswood didn’t tell anyone what he had done. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department only found out because the man later called and spoke to a supervisor to say thank you. This week, Officer Spottswood was honored with a CMPD Acts of Excellence award for his kindness.

According to my brother’s stepson, the family was told the decision on a plea was not theirs. I’ve been told the same thing directly — Michigan law gives victims the right to be consulted, not the right to control a plea. The sentence was 7 to 30 years. He could be out in April 2029. Weeks earlier he had been pulled over for no license and bad plates while already on parole. The system left him with his keys. The police also destroyed the vehicles months before he was finally arrested. The family was treated as an inconvenience. The arraignment was delayed for a year. When we tried to watch on video after taking time off work, the feed was never turned on. After the hearing was rescheduled because of the court’s own technical problems, the judge signed off by telling the defendant “Good luck.” My brother’s stepson told me a victims advocate described me as “difficult” after I spoke up about how the family was being treated. Michigan’s Crime Victim’s Rights Act requires notice to siblings of a deceased victim. We had to fight for basic information. At sentencing he said he was sorry. He said he would take my brother’s place. A man who is truly sorry does not spend years trying to undo the plea. The Court of Appeals rejected the application for lack of merit. The deadline to ask the Michigan Supreme Court ends this week. He has an end date. Our family does not. My brother’s grandson was six when this happened. He told the family he wanted the driver to kill him too so he could be with his grandpa. The system failed my brother, his wife, our family, and the people of Michigan. Former USAF pilot Gerald Eddie Brown Jr. was arrested in February 2026 on charges of providing instruction to Chinese fighter pilots of the Peoples Liberation Army Air Force since 2023. Brown served as an officer and pilot for 24 years with the call sign “Runner” before retiring in 1996. Over the course of his career, some of his duties included responsibility for nuclear weapons delivery systems, flying combat missions, and serving as a pilot instructor and simulator instructor on aircraft including the F-4 Phantom II, F-15 Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, and the A-10 Warthog. Following his retirement, he worked as a commercial cargo pilot for UPS and traveled to China more than 30 times while working in that role, according to reporting by Military.com. He was terminated from UPS in 2017 after he caused a physical altercation in the cockpit during a flight. He later worked as a flight simulator instructor for two U.S. defense contractors training U.S. military pilots on the A-10 and the F-35 Lightning II. In August 2023 he began negotiating a new contract to provide similar services to the Chinese government. Brown’s contact in China was Su Bin AKA Stephen Su, who also hired former USMC pilot Daniel Edmund Duggan in 2017, who I have previously posted about. In 2014, Su Bin’s company PRC Lode Technology Company was added to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Entity List. Su Bin himself was sentenced to 46 months in prison in 2016 for conspiring to hack into US military systems. In December 2023, Brown traveled to China, where he remained until earlier this month. According to the Department of Justice, during his first week in China, he was debriefed extensively on current USAF capabilities and provided a presentation on his own career and accomplishments. I'm a Board Certified anesthesiologist and have been in practice for 24 years. I just learned that the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia where I trained has launched a program to increase flu vaccine uptake among children by vaccinating them while under anesthesia. The program is called "Close your Eyes. We'll Immunize" This is stunningly irresponsible. Here's why: Anesthetists are extremely risk avoidant and endeavor to minimize patient exposure to anything which carries potential side effects. This is particularly true of pediatric patients who very often have never been exposed to anesthetic medications. We simply cannot know how an individual child will respond to these drugs for the first time. Every single medication we administer during an operation can potentially trigger untoward or allergic responses. When this occurs our primary responsibility is to stabilize the patient. Our secondary responsibility is to identify the offending agent. There is absolutely no justification of introducing another agent, in this case a flu vaccine, which carries a risk of harm and contributes nothing to the success of the operation. Some of the more common side effects of flu vaccines are fever (11-16%) and less commonly, a rash (1%). There is also an non-zero risk of severe allergic reactions and high-grade fevers which can develop over the course of minutes. What if a child under anesthesia receives a vaccine and develops a rash and/or fever? Is it from the antibiotic that the surgeon requested? Is it from the narcotic? The anxiolytic? The barbiturate? Anesthetic gases can also (rarely) trigger a life threatening response called Malignant Hyperthermia which commonly presents as a high fever. Without subsequent testing we cannot know which agent was responsible. Most commonly the testing is never done and the child’s record will forever reflect the possibility that some or all of the drugs which were used are responsible for their reaction. This makes future anesthetic care significantly more challenging and will require the use of alternatives which may not be necessary. Advocating for a flu vaccine while a child is anesthetized reflects the pervasive yet inaccurate attitude among the medical establishment that vaccines are perfectly safe. I simply cannot believe that my mentors would have ever supported this initiative when I was a resident there. Close your eyes indeed.
