Doug Leone has a confession that should haunt every VC:
"We owned 20% of Nvidia and sold."
"We were the first investor in Apple and sold."
"We owned 10% of Google and sold."
Then the gut punch: "If we hadn't sold Google, that would be half a trillion dollars."
This is Sequoia — arguably the greatest venture firm ever built — and even they couldn't stop themselves from ringing the register too early.
The hardest discipline in venture isn't finding winners. It's holding them when every rational instinct says "take the gain."
The asymmetry is brutal: your downside on a winner is capped at your position. Your upside is uncapped. Yet the psychological pressure to sell — the LP calls, the markups, the "responsible portfolio management" — pushes in the other direction every single time.
Most VCs optimize for a good fund. The legends optimize for one position they never sold.

The ARR multiple fallacy
ARR multiple is not the right way to think about sub-20% growers.
Simple framework:
If you’re growing sub-20%, you get a 10-30x EBIDTA or FCF multiple. If you use this rubric, Miro is very fairly valued by Bending Spoons.
Only 30%+ growers get the luxury of an ARR multiple.
The reason is that 30% growth means you’re doubling in 3 years and so the revenue base will be 2x in 36 months, and the margin structure will look different at 2x scale. Cash flow today is a rounding error against that. So you value the trajectory, and ARR is the cleanest proxy for trajectory.
At 15% growth, doubling takes 5 years. That's close enough to "never" that the market stops paying for the future and starts paying for the present. The present is earnings. If you're not producing them, you're not a growth company anymore. You're a bad value company.
The mistake founders make is anchoring to the multiple they had at 40% growth and thinking the ARR multiple just compresses. It doesn't compress. It gets replaced. You cross 30% on the way down and the entire valuation framework switches out from under you.
Which is why the worst place to be is 20-30% growth with no FCF. Growth investors won't pay for it. Value investors can't. You're priced by whoever is least excited,a really painful place to be.

The current SaaSacre narrative is overly simplistic and wrong!
The companies that are going to get run over are the ones that gutted engineering, pushed up prices on customers for marginal workflow products, focused on FCF above innovation, and in many cases even added leverage.
What fits that profile? Just about every large software PE deal or aggressive public activist. They’re all cooked!
They can’t innovate because they don’t have internal talent. No strong AI engineer wants to go work in these shops and they have to service debt so they can’t be bold. Their only chance is M&A and they’re running out of time. This cycle is going to play out 3x faster than cloud did (and be 7x larger, btw).
The newly public & “challenger” class of cloud will innovate and lead, but it’s a short list.
Chaos = opportunity! It’s never been a better time to be the disruptor.
This’ll be fun! @BessemerVP

Venture Capital: where inexperienced rookies think they're really fucking smart & experienced veterans think they're really fucking lucky.
