On the 35th anniversary of the end of apartheid - knowing Nelson Mandela - who emerged from 27 years of prison with his humanity and humor intact - was the privilege of my life. Sadly, Mandiba - as he was known - has no successors on the world stage.

My answer to Victor Orban‘s media’s personal attacks against me: I will keep speaking out to remind the world that Hungary is not only about Orban’s volatile nationalism. Hungary has been down this path before with tragic results.

Orban seems not to have learned any lessons from a history which cost my grandparents their lives and my parents their freedom.

Disgraceful - and heartbreaking. Hungary is again - as in the 30’ and ‘40’s - on the wrong side of history. The question now: Will the EU sanction this member gone rogue? theguardian.com/us-news/2023…

The comment was self-referential, of course. But the caller was distraught by the sudden passing of the much younger man, so I appreciated the message. RIP Henry - a flawed but remarkable man of our times

Many around the planet have their HK memories. Mine is the call I got from him several days after Richard Holbrooke’s death. “He was my only peer on the ‘other side’” Kissinger told me,  “Richard’s tragedy was that - unlike Nixon - Obama didn’t want a Big Man in his circle,”

An American Ambassador We Can be Proud of what a stark contrast to Tucker Carlson’s comical interview with Orban this week. hu.usembassy.gov/news-remark…

A historic night at Pen - with Salman Rushdie and fellow scribes (here Thomas Chatterton Williams) striking a blow for the freedom to write - and even to offend.

On the 75th anniversary of the murder of  George Polk CBS has revived the story - (including my 30 year old interview). Hope you'll tune in to the much longer version on an upcoming podcast, in honor of our captive colleague, Evan Gershkovich.
On this #WorldPressFreedomDay, I’m proud to present this trailer for a @CBSNewsRadio documentary I’ve produced for air later this month. We’ve dug deep into the CBS News archives and government records to reopen the case and ask… Who Killed George Polk?

I wrote this as warning of the high cost for a nation not facing up to its darkest chapters. The warning was ignored in Hungary and elsewhere. Thanks for reading and for joining the fight for truth - however painful - in our collective memories . nytimes.com/2002/07/21/opini…
