Feeling very grateful today after defending my dissertation yesterday, thank you so much to all the amazing members of @NEEDLabColumbia. And especially thank you to @KimberlyGNoble for being such an amazing mentor over the past 5 years! 💕
Huge congratulations to @katrinarsimon, who successfully defended her dissertation @NEEDLabColumbia @TeachersCollege today — a masterful set of studies linking noise exposure, brain development, and language development. We are all so proud of you! #PHinisheD! 🎉
Really enjoyed working on this paper on SES, sleep, and brain structure. And also made a new friend/colleague in @melissamjhansen in the process! :) Check out our work!
I am excited to share our new work highlighting sleep as an important consideration in the study of social inequity: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/… with @katrinarsimon @KimberlyGNoble and others!

Happy holidays from @NEEDLabColumbia!
One of my favorite humans (@MelissaAGiebler) gave an amazing talk at #isdp2022 this afternoon on caregiving and brain activity. Could not think of a better talk to end my time in San Diego with!
Fantastic talk by @MelissaAGiebler at #ISDP2022 examining associations between developmentally supportive parenting and infant EEG. She hit out of the park! @NEEDLabColumbia @devpsybio

Wish I could have made it to #isdp2022 in person this year, but glad to have so many trainees from @NEEDLabColumbia representing at @devpsybio!
Many thanks to @devpsybio for this highlight! Very excited for #ISDP2022 where I'll hopefully be presenting my work on noise, auditory ERPs, and emerging language in kiddos!!!
Early Career Spotlight 🔦 Katrina Simon (@katrinarsimon) is a Ph.D. candidate in Developmental Psychology in the Need Lab at Columbia University (@needlabcolumbia)! [1/5]
One of the first research projects I ever worked on at Penn was published recently! Congratulations to @austinboroshok et al., on these super interesting findings!
My first first-author paper is out today in @Nature_NPJ Science of Learning! 🤯 Through all my doubts that “Boroshok et al.” would ever be a thing, @ally_mackey was there to help steer the ship & keep me patient. Excited to finally share this work! nature.com/articles/s41539-0…

A beautiful wrap-up to our PCI coding team with @GAbdurokhmonova, and @MelissaAGiebler (missing the awesome @Ben_Bravo1). So excited for @GAbdurokhmonova who is headed to work with @RachelRRomeo for her PhD! So proud of you!
Thank you all for the love and recognition! From complaining about airplane noise as a teenager growing up in JFK's flight path to being able to write about noise and development as a training scientist is quite a gift!
Congrats to @katrinarsimon, whose first dissertation paper was published in Brain & Language today! In 5-9 yos, excessive home noise as measured by @LENAEarlyTalk were assoc w/ reduced cortical thickness in L IFG. sciencedirect.com/science/ar… @TeachersCollege @NEEDLabColumbia

In our new preprint out in @bioRxiv, we show that variability in fMRI-based proxies of neuroplasticity predicts individual differences in adults' learning!

@ally_mackey & I are so excited to finally share this rich dataset + some fascinating results! 🧵⬇️
CONGRATULATIONS Dr. @anneparkt!! I could write a whole thread about how incredible of a friend and mentor Anne has been to me since we first met at Penn FIVE (?!) years ago, but I’ll just stick with saying that I am so proud of you and excited to see what you do next! 🥰🥰

So happy to be part of a society that is continuously so supportive of training scientists like me! 🥰 #ISDP2021
Interesting work by @katrinarsimon @STRscience @KimberlyGNoble on the associations between noise exposure and SES on language development @devpsybio #ISDP2021 🧠👶 🔊

Check out our new work - Environmental influences on the pace of brain development w/ @DaniSBassett & @ally_mackey in @NatRevNeurosci!
We suggest that childhood SES affects not only the outcome but also pace of brain dev, w/ implications for plasticity.

Not even 24 hours later and the gaslighting and denying of anti-Asian racism is already flooding in. This is the reality of being Asian in America. Never belonging, never fully American, and even when the racism is so blindingly obvious - people are so quick to ignore and deny.
