Every day, the internet feels a little noisier, angrier. Can we turn it off for a while and pretend it's 1994?

We said a final goodbye to the family dog yesterday, at the ripe old age of 16 (RIP Gizmo). He was really my daughter's dog - a present when she was just 8; she's now 24. In her eyes, he never got any older, never changed - the one constant over two-thirds of her life. The family lost a pet, but my daughter lost her childhood friend. A tough day. 💔

You could read another repetitive, homogenous, clone book that the mainstream publishers churn out in an attempt to convince you that some berk off the telly has suddenly discovered they're a talented writer. You could do that or, hear me out ...

Do people still buy calendars? I managed a bookshop back in the 90s, and we sold a shit-load of calendars in the run-up to Christmas. Now, I can't remember the last time I saw one.

The original Reliant Robin from Only Fools & Horses is heading to auction next month, with a guide price of £30,000-£40,000. I'm guessing that would make it the world's most expensive Robin - certainly the most sought-after. Photo © alankennyphotography.com/

As most of you know, my first novel, The '86 Fix, involves a middle-aged man reliving one weekend as his teenage self, hoping to change a single decision he made. Most of us have made a decision that we lived to regret - one that rippled through our lives for years, decades even. So, along with my author buddy, @AdamEcclesBooks, we're turning that concept into a podcast: Fate or Fix. You send us the one decision you'd change if you could. We read it out, go back in time to the year it happened, and hand it to our third co-host, Gershwin: an AI with no interest in your feelings and a lot of questions. Once she's finished, Adam and I rule - either you get your fix, or we decide fate had it right all along. We're recording and releasing the first episode in October, but before we hit record, we'd value your feedback on the concept and whether it's something you'd listen to. Visit the website, FateOrFix.com, and feel free to share any thoughts or feedback. And of course, if you'd like to submit your own regret you'd like to fix, please do (you don't have to use your real name).

Chatting to an estate agent buddy this morning about the Echo Lane books. He started his career in 89, so he remembers how shitty the market was in the early 90s. Worryingly, he said that the market today is showing some similar signs: interest rates creeping up, negative equity, and even the odd vendor handing their keys back to the lender because they can't afford the mortgage repayments. He mentioned a valuation he did yesterday. A couple bought a brand new flat in 2022 and paid £250k for it with a 5% deposit (£12,500). They're struggling because their 3-year fixed-rate deal ended and the repayments doubled. He told them that the most they'd get for it would be £220k - there's a glut of flats on the market as buy-to-let landlords are selling up. Basically, they've lost their original deposit, AND they'll need to find another £25k to sell the flat - that's what it'll cost to cover the mortgage shortfall plus solicitors and agents fees. Grim times. 😬

A quick post, but a MASSIVE thank you to everyone who's jumped straight in and bought 'No Onward Chain'. Thanks to your amazing support, it's topping three categories and now ranks among the top 300 books on Amazon. ❤️ Maybe Apple, Netflix, or Amazon are taking note - the Gibley Smith crew are outranking Blake Crouch. 😁

Now that 'No Onward Chain' is out in the wild, can I ask a favour once you've finished it? If you post any comments about the book, especially about certain plot points, PLEASE don't include any spoilers. 🙏 Thank you.
