50 Years Ago Today: Giants Stadium hosted its first regular-season game, and I was there! It was my first NFL game, and I remember every detail, even half a century later. It was a perfect, sunny day. Pageantry filled the air for the grand opening. #BigBlue 1/

1971 NFC Divisional Playoffs The first NFL Playoff Game at Candlestick Park #FTTB 24 #HTTR 20 Washington led 10-3 in the 3rd Quarter when Larry Brown was stopped on a 4th-down play deep in S.F. territory. The game quickly turned after that, as John Brodie hit Gene Washington on a 78-yard TD pass. The Niners went on to win from there. pro-football-reference.com/b…

Terry Hanratty was a 2x All-American and Heisman hopeful as the quarterback for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the late 1960s. In 1969, Chuck Noll and the Steelers drafted him #30 overall in the second round of Noll's first NFL Draft. Unfortunately for Hanratty, Pittsburgh would draft Terry Bradshaw number one overall the following season, leaving Hanratty mostly a backup. He went on to win two Super Bowls with #HereWeGo, and his final Steelers appearance came late in Super Bowl X after Bradshaw was knocked out of action. That offseason, Hanratty went unprotected and was selected in the Expansion Draft by the worst team in NFL history, the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He made a handful of appearances, with his sole start ironically coming in Week 13 against his old team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, at Three Rivers Stadium. Hanratty was pulled in favor of Steve Spurrier after throwing just four passes: one was intercepted, two were incomplete, and one was caught for a one-yard loss. #WeAreTheKrewe infamously lost the game 42-0, and Hanratty retired at the end of the season.

Forty Years Ago, the New York Giants were in the midst of a Super Bowl run. Early in the season, however, #BigBlue was still finding its offensive footing. In a Week 4 home matchup vs. the #Saints, New York fell behind 17-0 in the first half. TE Mark Bavaro took a vicious open-field shot to the face from a New Orleans defender, breaking his jawbone. Then Lawrence Taylor and the defense got mean and shut out New Orleans for the rest of the day. Bavaro returned to the game and scored a TD to ignite the Giants, leading to a 20-17 win and cementing his "Rambo tough" legend. We enjoyed every minute of it from our seats in Section 319.

The 1991 season saw the Buffalo Bills coming off their first Super Bowl appearance. The Los Angeles Raiders had lost to Buffalo in the AFC Championship Game the previous season. Both teams were headed to the playoffs when they met again in Week 15 at the L.A. Coliseum. #RaiderNation held the lead for most of the game before Jim Kelly led Buffalo back in the second half, throwing for 352 yards and 2 TDs to force overtime. Scott Norwood ultimately hit a 42-yard FG in OT, securing a 30-27 win for #BillsMafia. Buffalo would go on to win the AFC and appear in Super Bowl XXVI, their second of four consecutive Super Bowl appearances.

The Air Coryell years were the best era of #BoltUp football in our lifetime. In Week 3 of the 1981 season, Dan Fouts threw 3 TD passes, and James Brooks, Chuck Muncie and Kellen Winslow combined for 4 touchdowns in a 42-31 rout of #ChiefsKingdom at Arrowhead. San Diego went on to play in the AFC Championship Game that year.

The 1975 #RamsHouse team may have been the best of the Chuck Knox era. In the NFC Divisional Playoffs, Ron Jaworski threw for 203 yards, including a beautiful 66-yard TD pass to Harold Jackson, helping L.A. to a 35-23 win over #RiseUpRedSea. RB Lawrence McCutcheon rushed for 202 yards on 37 workhorse carries, pacing the Rams. St. Louis QB Jim Hart threw two first-half pick-sixes (Jack Youngblood and Bill Simpson) before the Cardinals outscored L.A. in the second half. The Rams advanced to the NFC Championship Game the following week.

In 1980, the Pittsburgh Steelers were coming off their 4th Super Bowl victory, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers reached the playoffs for the first time and the NFC Championship Game the previous season. In a Week 10 matchup, Pittsburgh's first visit to Tampa Stadium, Doug Williams threw 3 TD passes for #WeAreTheKrewe, while Terry Bradshaw led a balanced attack, throwing a TD pass of his own to Lynn Swann in a 24-21 victory for #HereWeGo. In the end, both teams had disappointing 1980 seasons and missed the playoffs.
