Introducing myself:
I install 2 things for privately held SMB owners:
1) Key Employee Packages that deliver the feeling of Ownership and the Payday of a partner - without equity or profit-share.
2) I help Key Employees (or Child) use private equity tactics, without private equity so they can offer multiples that rival any PE or ESOP — no loans, no SBA, no valuation fights, no cash out of pocket, even No money... No problem!!!
Valuable Speaker for SMB owner audiences

This guy just wrote my new slogan:
"Business gets much easier when you master the many other ways of rewarding your employees."
While he's right...
The ultimate answer is that nothing is more powerful than delayed gratification. (unleashes mastery, purpose, self-accomplishment all in one)
The problem is, it's an unwelcomed guest"
Took me years to master the art and science of implementing with key players.
I have learned a massive arbitrage when it comes to compensation:
There are a lot of different ways that you can pay someone. The most obvious method is salary and bonuses. In our modern world, our salary gets processed digitally and deposited directly into our bank account. Although it is helpful to the employee, it is intangible. They will never physically see the money, and it is hard for them to tie that money to a specific future purchase.
Basically, this make salary and bonuses table steaks for compensation. We need to be looking for other concrete ways to financially compensate employees. Some examples include:
Buying their lunch
A gift card to their favorite store
Providing a laptop that can be used for work & personal
A budget for decorating their office
I've found that these forms of compensation deliver MUCH higher happiness per dollar spent. If I pay $10 for an employee's lunch, that is much more concrete than their digital bank deposit being $7 higher after taxes.
Compensating people in ways other than salary requires creativity and thinking outside the box, but it is worth the effort. And the ultimate skill is learning to compensate people in ways that don't cost money. Some examples:
+Publicly recognizing a team member for excellence.
+Writing thank you notes.
+Investing time in the personal development of people who you manage/lead.
+Creating an environment where employees are empowered to make decisions.
+Cultivating a culture that people will enjoy being immersed in for 40 hours a week.
You should strive to pay your employees well, but a paycheck is the most basic form of compensation. Business gets much easier when you master the many other ways of rewarding your employees.
1) Spot on Take... Overdue.
2) when you try and solve a problem with MONEY... (400% raise)...
Without tackling the emotions... They will ALWAYS WANT MORE!!!
The IQ brain can't be satiated...
Pay is 95% emotional.
Solve that 1st
The Cowboys cheerleaders got a 400% raise last year. Now they’ve unionized.
To appreciate how we got here: a former cheerleader sued in 2018 alleging she made $8 an hour while the guy in the mascot suit made $65,000 a year.
Apparently she picked the wrong costume.
This is the most valuable sports franchise in the world. And we’re talking about some of its most recognizable people.
If your employees need a lawsuit and a Netflix documentary to get a decent raise, you probably let that conversation go a little too long.
EMPLOYEE RETENTION SPECIALIST retweeted
The default is poverty. Poverty needs no explanation because it is the most likely outcome any society will produce. It’s not rare, the majority of human history is full of poverty. It needs little analysis.
What’s rare and hard is affluence. It’s incredibly difficult to create a society that retains wealth peacefully.
Almost no societies in history have become wealthy peacefully.
Discovering and aligning to the narrow set of ideas that defeat poverty is worthwhile.
Everywhere we look that has succeeded in creating a wealthy, affluent society with low rates of poverty
- focused on economic freedom
- treats individuals as having agency and responsibility for their own life.
- pro-wealth, pro-success, pro-business, pro-trade
- treated taxation as a necessary evil not a goal
- accepts the reality that freedom doesn’t produce equality. But it does produce a wealthier nation.
Food for thought...
Incentives best paid monthly.
Retention best as an account that accumulates for delayed gratification.
Challenge... Delayed gratification is an unwelcomed guest.
Replying to @kmajmudar
Every comp plan at my agency now has a monthly retention bonus built in.
Service is what keeps clients around, so I pay my team on it
This clip was from a 75 year old company that never fired anyone.
💯 This is what I design for key players in SMB companies
Way more powerful than
-money
-kpi
- incentive
A-Player comp. should be like boosters on a rocket. Treat it that way.
Most employees aren't designed to survive 2 doubling of revenues.
The skill sets change.
The activities they love go from energy filling to energy draining.
Design your comp. to exit certain A-Player's honoring their skill set and destination.
Then bring on the next skill set.
I have an SMB Twit ask.
I need some help to get to 50 Amazon verified purchased reviews.
Would you consider spending $9.99 if the topic is of interest, and leaving a review.
It's an easy Saturday morning Read.
A.I. dynamic pricing lost my loyalty.
I switched $1.2m in customer lifetime value away from @AmericanAir ...
-cards
-speaking bureau airline
-loyalty programs
After I adjusted all my stuff... AI is now showing me ~$600 less per ticket.
Beware of false AI prophets...
Am I happy for the post office for doing something about losing money?
Or annoyed we don't seek to privatize it at this point.
Packed house in Roanoke, VA today at the CFMA construction conference.
Turned lots of CFO & Controller heads today with HOW TO PAY.

Silver Tsunami is as much about "STUFF" as it is about wealth.
Motorcycles, cars, decaying homes, ceramics, photos, dining silverware.
3 key employees called me this week.
All $3-$10m rev companies where they created product or relationship to blow threw $10m.
All disgruntled that the owners botched the emotional and monetary response.
