A beautiful day to break new ground on UMMC's Cancer Center and Research Institute.
Our ambitions to be the best and deliver first-class care don't stop with this building. The real goal is the pursuit of a National Cancer Institute designation.Ā
When we achieve this goal, it will be the first NCI-designated cancer center in Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas ā and patients from across the region will be able to come here for treatment.

Iāve appointed Bo Luckey Commissioner of the @MissDPS effective immediately. @TindellSean will remain at MDPS until November 30, 2026, to assist with the transition.
Mississippi will always back the blue. Our state recognizes the tremendous sacrifices our law enforcement community and their families make to keep us safe. We will continue using every tool at our disposal to support them.Ā
Bo has done an incredible job as Chief of Capitol Police. His work has made our capital city and state safer. He has years of law enforcement experience and is the right person to lead the Mississippi Department of Public Safety.
Iād like to thank Sean for admirably serving our state and wish him well in the next chapter of his career.
š„ DANGEROUS FIRE CONDITIONS FRIDAY (10/16/26) AND SATURDAY (10/17/26)
Strong winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation are creating dangerous fire conditions across Mississippi today and into the weekend. Red Flag Warnings are in effect today as a strong cold front moves through, bringing northwest winds gusting between 25 and 35 mph.
These conditions can cause fires to spread quickly, so now is the time to take extra precautions.
š« Help prevent wildfires:
Follow local burn bans and restrictions.
Avoid outdoor burning.
Secure trailer chains to prevent sparks.
Dispose of cigarettes properly.
Stay Safe Mississippi!
DROP, COVER, AND HOLD ON!
Even emergency management professionals need to practice what they preach! Today, the MEMA team participated in the Great ShakeOut earthquake drill to practice the actions that can help save lives when an earthquake strikes.
šø Weāre sharing a look at our team in action as we put earthquake safety into practice!
Do you know what to do if the ground starts shaking? Drop to your hands and knees, take cover under a sturdy desk or table, and hold on until the shaking stops.
Preparedness starts with practice. Take a few minutes today to talk with your family about earthquake safety and make sure everyone knows what to do!

On Wednesday, the Senate Government Structure Committee will look at ways to make state government more efficient and effective.
Two important conversations as we prepare for the 2027 Legislative Session.
Hurricane Isaias is expected to make landfall along the Florida Panhandle later this evening Friday, October 9, into early Saturday, October 10. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) is reminding residents across the state to remain alert and take necessary precautions now.
