“You can’t expect that people will be fine if the next-closest children’s hospital is a flight away or an eight-hour drive,” said Elizabeth Mack, a pediatric critical care doctor.
My latest for @KFFHealthNews, @CBSNews
Hospital units dedicated to treating the nation's sickest kids are disappearing nationwide. In the past year alone, hospitals have closed pediatric intensive care units for critically ill kids in Montana, Oregon, and Missouri. Overnight hospital wings for kids have also shuttered in Illinois and California.

More than 130 Americans have reached out to @KFFHealthNews about how healthcare costs are upending their lives. “It’s become an all-of-us issue,” one patient advocate said. @renurayasam & Sam Whitehead explain why bringing the costs down won’t be easy. kffhealthnews.org/health-car…
Average U.S. health spending per person increased to $15,474 in 2024, not necessarily because we’re sicker, but because of increased prices. Find out where the money’s coming from and how it’s being spent. @renurayasam & Lydia Zuraw dive into the data: kffhealthnews.org/health-car…

A few years ago, @MarkianHawryluk retired from a long career in healthcare journalism. Turns out it's still so interesting he cannot stay away! He's launched his own Substack on Oregon's looming proposal for a universal healthcare plan: markianhawryluk.substack.com…
And here's a curtain-raiser piece he wrote for us at @KFFHealthNews about Oregon's proposal as the national conversation once again turns to various universal healthcare proposals, such as Medicare For All kffhealthnews.org/elections/…
So great to have @MarkianHawryluk's healthcare reporting and writing back in the mix.

Immigrant detainees have told courts across the nation that detention officials have failed to treat or stabilize their conditions, from pregnancy to prostate cancer, suggesting that systemic lapses in care extend well beyond record deaths in ICE custody. kffhealthnews.org/courts/ice…

New Washington Post, new approach to news. Today: News reruns! On the Metro front, this excellent piece about the theft of a $24,000 wine bottle—a story that originally appeared on November 26 of last year. So nice, they ran it twice. washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/…
