What do we think of L.A.B. Golf's upcoming MEZZ.2i putter? The original MEZZ.1 was one of the most important putters in L.A.B.'s history as it was the model made famous by both Adam Scott and Lucas Glover as the company started to gain traction. I spoke with L.A.B. co-founder Sam Hahn about the new design and he was quick to point out that the company wasn't going to just release a new version of the MEZZ just because it felt it needed to. "We have messed around with plenty of different iterations of MEZZ, and one of the things that we've always found frustrating about other companies is that they'll refresh products simply because they need to put something to market," he said. "We had any number of opportunities to put a refreshed MEZZ out there that we didn't feel was better. This one's better." So what makes this one different? • A new compact fang shape with much softer edges and smoother curves. • The same deep-milled stainless steel face from the VZN.1i • An optimized shaft and weight placement to boost forgiveness • Less loft (2˚ instead of 3˚) to help players who add loft through impact, which Hahn said is the majority of recreational players • The ability to pick up the ball between the fangs In my own testing, I found the MEZZ.2i to be one of the best feeling L.A.B. putters I've tried. Hahn said the slight differences in construction between MEZZ.2i and VZN.1i have led it to feel softer despite having the same face. It also seems that this update has been very well received among previous MEZZ.1 users. "All throughout the building, there is nobody that was using a MEZZ.1 or MEZZ Max that hasn't already switched to the MEZZ.2," Hahn said. "It's all the stuff you love about MEZZ.1, and solving for all the problems in between. So we're really proud of this one and super stoked to see how it does out there in the world." I'll have a full breakdown of the new putter coming on launch day which is November 10. For now, enjoy the sweet new black cherry finish.
