Chinese EVs are “affordable” because of weak labour and environmental laws, massive government subsidization and significant domestic overcapacity.
➡️ The average hourly wage at a Chinese auto plant is approximately USD $1.93-4.27 (Reuters). In comparison, unionized auto plants in Canada pay an average hourly wage of CAD $44.52 plus pensions and benefits.
➡️ China’s electricity grid, a key input into EV manufacturing, is heavily reliant on coal (60% of generation). Canada’s electricity grid draws over 80% of power from renewable and non-emitting sources.
➡️ China's state-directed industrial policy provided over USD $230 billion in subsidies between 2009 and 2023 (CSIS). Today, China’s auto production overcapacity exceeds 20 mn vehicles annually.
Visited Chery’s plant in China to discuss their upcoming models and hear about their plans to introduce affordable EVs to Canadians. I also discussed research and innovation they’re doing with universities like Concordia and the University of Toronto.
They’re working with Canadian technology, too. Blackberry’s QNX technology will power the cars they want to bring to the Canadian market.

“Ending the tariff regime and war against Canada.”
El-Sayed: "The first 3 things we have to do is end this war -- we need a war powers resolution that brings war-making capacity back to Congress -- number 2, ending this tariff regime & war against Canada, but number 3, stopping the nuclear bomb that's about to go off in our healthcare system with Medicaid cuts"

Chery is not going to make cars in Canada. We all know this.
We need to focus on Brampton Assembly and the 5 companies that already assemble cars in Canada and the hundreds of suppliers making parts and systems for them.
1000s of autoworkers are fighting to save their jobs, including in Minister Sidhu's own riding of Brampton.
Anyone who understands the auto industry knows the problem China poses to 100000s of jobs here in Canada and across NA and to the entire manufacturing industry.

As a union we understand this.
Being able to walk away from a bad deal is critical to how we make progress.
Sometimes the strongest negotiating position is being willing to walk away from a bad deal.
If Trump knows Canada will sign anything just to announce an agreement, what incentive does he have to offer better terms?
Canadians elected a prime minister to defend their interests. Keep negotiating, expand our options and judge any deal by what it delivers. A signature at any price is surrender dressed up as progress.
