I'm obsessed with this topic :) Here is another attempt, this time with the brilliant @audreyt, to flesh out a concrete and actionable plan to pace AI while giving voice to the people most affected by it. We use a game-theoretic framework hard-nosed realists who don't trust the democracy argument can relate to. Let's make it happen before it's too late. Thank you @NoemaMag for supporting these ideas and for the fast turnaround. noemamag.com/let-the-people-…

And if you are curious about the cancelled press conference and the delay in releasing the report here is a pretty good summary of what happened: ctmirror.org/2026/10/21/tax-…

I’ve been quiet on the Connecticut Citizens’ Assembly front since the press conference planned for October 13 at the State Capitol was cancelled, waiting to see how things would resolve. Good news: the Assembly members will unveil their final recommendations on property taxes at a virtual press conference on Mon. Oct 26, 2pm ET. Stay tuned. ct-citizens-assembly.org/

1/ My heart is heavy. I made a number of mistakes in my life, and not asking earlier for an immediate slowdown is one of them. If OpenAI starts making similar breakthroughs in biology, we risk something very ugly... I explain below how 1B could die because of advances in AI x Biology, and answer various questions. Slow down! That's what is being asked by YouTubers and creators with 300M+ subscribers combined. teamhuman.org/ A year ago, I co-led the Global Call for AI Red Lines, because I thought we still had some time. There is no more time. If they can do this in math, they will absolutely try to do this in ML research. RSI has arguably started: Claude already leads 26% of Anthropic's R&D, up from effectively nothing at the start of the year. RSI was once a red line. The red line has become the plan. Yoshua Bengio said, “RSI should be illegal”. I agree. We are mostly on track for AI 2027, and it's a coin flip between misalignment and extreme concentration of power in the hands of one company or one government. Prove you can keep control, or stop scaling! If OpenAI and Anthropic want to keep scaling, they should publish a safety case. Everyone seems to be forgetting that we already got an embedded evaluation, with the risk report from METR. We already know that mitigations are not ready. At the end of the last investigation, Beth Barnes from METR said: "We are not on top of it!". Even basic safeguards like DNA synthesis screening aren't enforced. Even if the technical safeguards were in place, society at large isn't ready, and we cannot allow this reckless experiment to continue. I support the acceleration of the diffusion of AI for beneficial applications, but even without further scaling, this technology is already as transformative as the internet and would take decades to percolate before we run out of low-hanging fruits. Seriously, AI is already nuts. Models now crack problems mathematicians couldn't solve for decades, while most hospitals still run on fax machines. Time to touch grass before we are forced to.
We’re releasing a broad range of new mathematical results produced by an internal frontier model. We’ve been consulting with the independent Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence at the Institute for Advanced Study, and we have drawn on their advice and public recommendations to inform how we release these results. github.com/openai/math

The Connecticut Citizens' Assembly on Property Taxes is concluding this morning (October 10) and online instead of in-person due to the storm on the planned date of September 26. Listening to them present their final proposals before submitting them to a vote is very moving. The care and thought that went into all of this are so impressive. The full report will be revealed to he public at a press conference held at the CT state capitol on Tuesday October 13 at 1pm organized by State Comptroller @SeanScanlonCT . Stay tuned! ct-citizens-assembly.org/abo…

Thought-provoking note from P Aronow. Not entirely convinced by all of it, but I think this should spark some much-needed conversations on LLMs and disclosures. pmaronow.github.io/llm-discl…

We created the International AI Governance Alliance to serve a similar function: iaiga.org. Anyone can become a signatory and vote on governance proposals. Please consider signing and sharing the site. We also list a few other ways to get involved in international governance of AI here: xitter.cf/aisafetyaction/status/…. @landemore @audreyt
There is an unique opportunity for the world to collectively unite around existential safety now, before President Trump and President Xi meet again on September 24th. According to 377,458 people across 104 countries, 60% of the world wants development of artificial superintelligence slowed, paused or stopped: niradata.com/ai-sentiment. This clearly is at odds with what frontier AI companies are currently doing. Many of the leaders in the existential safety space strongly support an international pause on frontier AI now, given the catastrophic and existential risks these uncontrollable frontier AI models pose humanity: x.com/aisafetyaction/status/…. After the recent—and perhaps ongoing—rogue AI swarm attacks on private companies, even the staunchest skeptic will find the risks hard to deny: rogueaitracker.com. We need international governance of AI. To do this well will take some time, given we need to do our best to solicit inputs from all people. The public can participate now in a number of ways, including: - Participating in the UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance: un.org/global-dialogue-ai-go… - Participating in the International Association for Safe & Ethical AI: iaseai.org - Designing your own international AI treaty: global-governance.ai/treaty - Sending your best proposals for international AI governance systems: iaiga.org In the meantime, Trump and Xi could agree on a win-win bilateral slowdown, pause or "pacing" of the development of frontier AI during their meeting on September 24th. Championing international cooperation on AI for the betterment of all could be the defining achievement of their lifetimes—one certainly for the history books.

Don't miss this event at BLS on Sunday, where our own Professor Sarah Haan will be moderating.
If the status quo isn't working, what can we do to fix it? I'll be at @bkbf on Sept 27 with @MecheleDickerson debating her plan to rebuild the middle class and my case for replacing politicians with ordinary citizens. The amazing corporate governance specialist @shaan_haan will moderate. 11am, Brooklyn Law School. It's free, and I'll be signing some books afterwards. brooklynbookfestival.org/eve…

AI policy is dominating #UNGA81 dialogue.🌐 Who’s holding the steering wheel? Are we going in the right direction? Are we going too fast? Are we going off a cliff? 🤔 Read my essay with @landemore via @NoemaMag.🙏 We must let the people set the pace of frontier AI!💯 #LLAP🖖

Next Sunday, I'll be at @brooklynlaw discussing my book (& more) with Hélène Landemore (@landemore) at the @bkbookfest. I'll explain why political leaders must rethink the gov't's role in tackling the affordability crisis & restoring upward mobility for the middle class. #BKBF

This paper by @davidautor & co-authors is one of the most important papers to date in the space of what AI does to learning. It's highly credible. And very much consistent with my own experience with use of agentic AI in research and teaching. nber.org/papers/w35720
