Lamu is opening a new chapter for Kenya’s trade, logistics and industrial future.
In discussions with Mr. Igor Van Den Essen, President for Africa and Europe at APM Terminals (Maersk), I explored how we can deepen our partnership in maritime infrastructure, logistics and digital trade.
Building on the company’s engagement with Kenya’s National Infrastructure Board, I encouraged Maersk to seize the opportunities emerging from the groundbreaking of the Dangote East Africa Oil Refinery in Lamu, a major catalyst for accelerating the LAPSSET Corridor and strengthening regional connectivity.
For Kenyans, this means attracting investment, expanding trade, creating jobs and opening new opportunities for businesses and young professionals across the maritime and logistics sectors.
Our ambition is to connect Kenya to bigger markets through partnerships that bring capital, technology, innovation and expertise.
Lamu is more than a port. It is a gateway to Kenya’s industrial future and Africa’s growing trade potential.
Mv. Hamouna, a 366 meter Iranian-flagged vessel has sailed into our waters carrying 5,597 transshipment containers. This isn't just a ship docking at #LamuPort. This is #LAPSSET telling the world: Kenya has been ready, East Africa is rising and the best is yet to come!

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed arrived in Kenya today for the groundbreaking of Dangote’s planned $16 billion Lamu refinery, a major energy project with a planned capacity of 700,000 barrels per day. The refinery is expected to serve petroleum markets across East Africa and begin operations by 2030.
For Ethiopia, the project carries significance beyond Kenya’s energy sector. Lamu forms part of the wider LAPSSET corridor, linking Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast with regional markets and strengthening a key trade and infrastructure route connecting Kenya with Ethiopia and South Sudan.
The development also comes shortly after Ethiopia announced a $660 million partnership with Djibouti and the Dangote Group to develop a refined petroleum pipeline from Damerjog in Djibouti to Dewele in Ethiopia, alongside major fuel storage facilities. The project is aimed at improving fuel supply, reducing logistics costs and strengthening the Ethiopia-Djibouti corridor.
Together, these developments highlight Ethiopia’s expanding energy and infrastructure cooperation with its neighbours. From Djibouti to Kenya’s Indian Ocean gateway, Ethiopia is becoming increasingly connected to a wider regional network that could strengthen trade, energy security and economic integration across East Africa.

Today, Lamu takes centre stage as we witness the groundbreaking of the East Africa Oil Refinery at #LamuPort Industrial Park—a landmark investment in Kenya’s industrial and energy transformation.
Located within the #LAPSSETCorridor, the refinery will strengthen the region’s energy, trade, logistics and industrial links, connecting Kenya and East Africa to global markets.
With a planned capacity of 700,000 barrels per day, the project is expected to boost energy security, reduce reliance on imported refined petroleum products, and support industries such as petrochemicals, fertiliser and manufacturing.
It will also create jobs, support local businesses, expand maritime activities and attract further investment along the #LAPSSETCorridor .
