When pancreatic cancer was diagnosed in 2008 she became his constant caregiver, present at every appointment and every night. “He was never alone,” she later said. “Not one night. I slept beside him every single night through the whole illness.” Patrick died on September 14, 2009, with her hand in his. In the last days he still called her “my girl” and told her he was thankful she had never given up.
