“What if we want a free Palestine, Murray?”
“I reckon you’ll get lots of things for free when you’re proper rockstars. This might be your ticket.”
Not a big believer in the bag-o-metrics approach to finding players, but the solution to the third risk detailed here is called a skyline query (which is just the Pareto front if you're that way inclined).

Creating a role-based player index is one of the foundational stages of a scouting process.
It is also one that requires a special level of scrutiny: a flawed approach can lead to a strong candidate being filtered out too early or an unsuitable one making it through to the next stage.
Getting it right requires a mix of football knowledge and a basic understanding of the underlying mathematics.
In our latest blog, we break down how to build an effective player index, including the three key risks to watch out for.

The rules of football analytics a decade ago were roughly: 1) there is easily accessible data for free, 2) don’t talk about it out front, and 3) don’t publish too much of it or they’ll come for you.
If people stopped forgetting 3 and got back to 1 and 2, you’d all be happier.
I tried to fix an old clock this weekend and discovered that I definitely do not have the patience for this shit. Software is much easier than hardware.
Alright I have no patience but I do have the sheer power of spite. Been baffled by some shonky soldering and a spring a previous maintainer had added to the alarm rack to keep it in contact with the snail. Ripped it off to let gravity guide it and it works perfectly now.
Morocco’s interplay has been glorious here, except for their absolute refusal to do any of it in the box.
This does feel intuitively obvious, but for the avoidance of doubt I tried simulating it and you lose in about 1/3rd the time. Furthermore, there is no stacking scheme that is better than a full fleet. You search slightly more for each ship but search less overall.
Today was my last day at Hudl/Statsbomb. I never really intended to spend a decade in football - it seemed like a fun hobby at the time and things got out of hand - but even now I feel like I've only achieved a fraction of what I set out to do.

Finally finished The Three Body Problem. Very sorry to my friends who like it, but I found it unfathomably bad in practically every way. Worst science fiction I've read in a long time. Won't be reading the sequels. 1.5 out of 5.

Perhaps the best post-match FA Cup final interview of 1995 — or indeed, any year — was given by Everton goalkeeper Neville Southall.
This is pure gold.
