I think it’s not very complicated actually: if fic writers say they’re uncomfortable with their work being compiled and distributed (and you shouldn’t presume that they’re not, go ask them), then don’t do it. It really comes down to basic human decency. Sure, you can go against their wishes and do it, but why would you? Why do you want to be a dick?
