October is when subtitle files get weird. [ominous breathing] [breathing intensifies] [silence] [louder silence]

NBA opening night, so a word for the occasion. "Fan" is short for fanatic, from Latin fanaticus, "of the temple", used for people who seemed possessed by a god. Sports writers clipped it to "fan" in the 1880s, and honestly the original meaning still fits.

One Piece dub hits Elbaph today, so a giant fact for the occasion: Old English already had a word for giant, "ent". Poets called old Roman ruins "enta geweorc", the work of giants. Yes, that's where Tolkien got the Ents.

Thanks for 35k views on a goodbye. Subtitle crimes is just us, one translation oddity at a time. xitter.cf/lexorastudio/status/21…

Subtitle crimes #30: English squeezed "God be with you" into "goodbye" over a few centuries. Spanish didn't even hide it. Adiós is literally "a Dios", to God.

Fish Audio's new TTS can change the tone of a single word. Translators have been doing that with one comma for years.

Auto-translate learned to translate a viral post. Translators learned to translate the auto-translate. Somebody has to.

Idioms are a test of whether you grew up in the same country as the writer. Oxford just admitted it. Which idiom broke you?

One missing accent. Whole wedding changes meaning. Subtitles do not get a do-over at the altar.
just added the Spanish word for “yes” to the app

Still our favorite kind of headache: invented names that have to sound like a children's book in every language.
A Universe Begins. See how Narnia was created in Narnia: The Magician's Nephew, a film by Greta Gerwig - only in theaters February 12.

Indonesian X spent the morning turning off auto-translate, and it kept turning itself back on. First thing they teach translators: if the reader already speaks the language, leave it alone.

Worst client instruction you've ever received? We'll go first: "Can you make it sound less translated? It's a legal contract."

TL note: "They're baaaaaaaack" has 8 a's. The subtitle line has room for 3. The dub actor gets to keep all of them.

Somewhere 30 subtitlers just got the same email. Step one is deciding how formal "Dearest Gentle Reader" is in a language with three levels of polite.

We put 1,268 test files through Lexora, from Trados and memoQ packages to Word, Excel, PowerPoint and InDesign. Translated every segment, exported, read it all back. Wrote up what broke and what we fixed, including the 22 files where our own error message was just wrong 🧵
