Hey guys, I got published! SOE Fraud in the crosshairs!
The fun thing about this is a) how blatant the fraud is, and b) it includes fake Military Civil Fusion contracts

Look, Beijing’s already shown its cards on this: it’s going to double down on exports. The only questions are whether it can shrug off the tariffs that are inevitably coming its way, or if there’s enough demand in developing countries to make up. bloomberg.com/news/newslette…

Obligatory thoughts on the Third Plenum decision document (12371.cn/2024/07/21/ARTI1721…): substance was unremarkable, with no significant departures from current reality. That said, the Party’s political emphasis seems to have to fully shifted back to economic development.

🧵For the last year, @PekingMike @NorthropKatrina and I have investigated a secret about Jack Ma’s business empire:
For years, Xiao Jianhua, jailed financier to China’s political elite, found early, lucrative windows to invest $1B+ in Ma’s companies, from Alibaba to Ant. 1/8
Confidential documents show that Xiao Jianhua, a corrupt investor tied to China’s political elite, backed the country’s most successful and revered entrepreneur. Michael Forsythe, Katrina Northrop and Eliot Chen report. buff.ly/3zTY6vx

A "hagaki" (葉書) is translated as a "postcard," but did you know it was once actually a message written on a leaf - the literal translation? It was meant to flatter the temporary nature of the message. For this reason, people would write love letters and poetry on leaves.
You can still do this, of course, for musings and scribbles, or as tea ceremony gifts, like this.

Personally I (and most of Taiwan) feel that childless cat ladies make strong presidents.
JD Vance says that Kamala Harris is a “childless cat lady” who is “miserable” with her life because she didn’t have children, and that not having children means that she doesn’t have “a direct stake” in America. Story. meidasnews.com/news/vance-ca…

It was a uniquely Hong Kong deal. Ko sold 1.94 billion new shares to Yu and Ma's consortium at a price WAY lower than what Reorient was trading at. For anyone in the deal, it was a license to print money b/c once word got out that Ma was behind the deal, shares soared. (13/x)

Why are they amazing? Because they are the internal docs of a deeply politically connected, criminal, brilliant billionaire and they tell a story SHARPLY at odds with what the public is told, and they give unique insight into how business is done at elite levels in China (6/x)

The source of the docs is a former employee who wanted to expose how Xiao could secretly control companies behind the scenes. The source also wanted to shine a light on shoddy enforcement and oversight, particularly in Hong Kong, that allowed Xiao to get away with this. (4/x)

MOFA released a statement sanctioning "U.S. Military Companies" (美国军工企业) to punish the U.S. for selling arms to Taiwan.
I just enjoy the verbal parallels to U.S. restrictions towards "Chinese Military Industrial Complex"(CMIC)

But, individually, we can conquer imposter syndrome - because people are really out here submitting first drafts. Don't do that. But, don't pursue perfection either. A lot of revising happens between acceptance and publication.
Perfect is the worst enemy of good enough.

The bar for revise and resubmit (rather than rejection) at many journals is much, much lower than most of today's grad students and early career folks think.
This isn't the job market where unfortunately you have a shot in the dark. Publications need and want your articles.

I have seen all 4 of these lines of best fit in published peer-reviewed papers and oddly the top left is probably the rarest type 📉

民主 in contemporary CJKV languages means 'democracy' (lit. 'demos-ruler'), but in classical texts it could refer to the monarch, i.e. the 'lord of the people,' as here in the Book of Documents 書經. /

To me, it’s very interesting how 主體 was used to reference “the rulers’ way” (五帝三王之道) in the ancient Chinese text 漢書, whereas the Japanese from the Meiji era used 主體/主觀 & 客體/客觀 for the western concepts of subject/subjective & object/objective
