One of my favourite Harry Potter casting stories is how Jason Isaacs almost turned down the role of Lucius Malfoy! Isaacs originally auditioned for Gilderoy Lockhart, a role that eventually went to Kenneth Branagh. However, director Chris Columbus was impressed enough to ask him to read for Lucius Malfoy instead. Isaacs wasn’t particularly happy about it. He had already signed on to play Captain Hook in Peter Pan (2003) and had absolutely no interest in playing two villains in children’s films back to back. When he was offered Lucius, he told his agent to turn it down. His agent persuaded him to at least think about it over the weekend. That’s when his nieces, nephews, godchildren and their parents started calling, begging him to accept the role. As Isaacs later joked, they weren’t particularly concerned about his career. They just wanted the chance to visit the Harry Potter set! He eventually gave in, and thankfully so. It’s difficult to imagine anyone else bringing Lucius Malfoy to life quite like he did. All because a bunch of kids wanted to visit Hogwarts!
