TERF ideology is antifeminist because it reduces womanhood to reproductive biology and secondary sex characteristics, the exact move patriarchy has always used to keep women defined by what their bodies can do for men or the species rather than as full political subjects. By insisting sex is the sole, immutable criterion for “woman,” it reifies the idea that female oppression is natural and body-bound rather than a system of social subordination that can be analyzed and dismantled. That is why so much TERF energy goes into gatekeeping other women (trans women, gender-nonconforming women, lesbians who date trans women) instead of confronting the material sources of male power: economic control, political exclusion, sexual violence, and the division of labor. When the project becomes “protect the category of biological female from contamination by anyone who fails the chromosome or genital test,” feminism collapses into a purity politics that treats some women as the problem and aligns, in practice, with conservative forces that also want sex tightly bound to traditional roles. A feminism that cannot imagine women outside of reproductive destiny is not liberating women; it is just policing the boundaries of the same cage.
