A man from Loanhead in Midlothian has been banned for life from owning or keeping animals after killing his black Labrador, Caillie. In September 2025, a member of the public told the Scottish SPCA they had heard a dog screaming at his home. When an inspector visited, Glenn Tweedie first claimed a vet had put the dog to sleep. He later admitted he had killed her himself and said he couldn’t afford treatment. A post-mortem found no sign of the illness he blamed, and he had also hidden her body in nearby woodland. Another Labrador at the property, Jura, was taken into the Scottish SPCA’s care. At Edinburgh Sheriff Court on 28 October 2026, Tweedie received the lifetime ban, a 12-month electronically monitored restriction of liberty order and an 18-month supervision order. The inspector on the case called it the most upsetting he had dealt with in three years. Caillie’s story began with one person who refused to ignore what they heard. 🚨 EMACIATED DOG LEFT DEAD, WRAPPED IN A RUG IN HIS OWNER’S GARDEN — SHE AVOIDED JAIL Jennifer Bentley, 47, of Congleton, Cheshire, has been banned from owning animals for life after neglecting her cane corso, Snoop, who endured prolonged suffering before his death. An RSPCA officer who discovered his remains described an overpowering smell of decay, severe muscle loss around his pelvis, spine and back legs, and maggots around his head. Bentley admitted Snoop had suffered diarrhoea for months but had not sought veterinary treatment. A vet concluded the dog had endured at least a month of gastrointestinal discomfort, malnutrition and psychological distress. He had also been swallowing harmful objects, including bleach, plastic and shoes — behaviour that may have been linked to hunger or frustration. His prolonged diarrhoea and extreme weight loss pointed to an untreated chronic medical condition. Although the precise cause of death could not be established, the evidence indicated he had suffered for a prolonged period. After Snoop died, his body was wrapped in a rug and left in the back garden of Bentley’s former home. She told an RSPCA officer a cremation company had instructed her to put him outside. At South Cheshire Magistrates’ Court, Bentley pleaded guilty to an animal welfare offence. Her sentence: ▪️ 20 weeks in prison, suspended for 18 months ▪️ Lifetime ban on owning animals ▪️ £400 in court costs Snoop was visibly unwell for months.
