CNN Journalist Amanpour’s “Typo” On X Reveals Continued Western Media Bias Towards Africa For decades, Africa has had to put up with the disrespect of being viewed by the West and its media as a single, monolithic entity, rather than a rich, diverse continent of 55 nations and over 3000 distinct ethnic groups. In a now-deleted post on X, renowned CNN "journalist" @amanpour commented on the September 29 coronation of Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, the 13th monarch of Tooro Kingdom in Uganda. Except, according to the post in question, this coronation happened in Nigeria. Was Amanpour – a veteran journalist with over 4 decades of experience – somehow unable to do a simple, 2-minute Google search before posting this blunder? Or was the continent she was commenting on just not worth the trouble for her? This latest “reporting error” by one of the West’s media parrots is a stark reminder to Africans that outside the shores of our continent, we are not seen as “Ugandans”, “Nigerians”, “Congolese”, “Sudanese”, or any of the myriad ethnic identities in between. We are seen and treated by these outsiders as one entity, yet we ourselves continue to let these divisions get in the way of our own collective progress. Africa’s continued division only helps the West. It does not help Africans. Kwame Nkrumah, Sékou Touré, Thomas Sankara and other great Pan-Africanist visionaries dreamed of a United States of Africa. They dreamed of a truly unified, truly sovereign, and truly powerful Africa, enriched by its boundless natural resources and human capital. That dream is what we must fight for.
