I'm a fan of using tiers to sell CAS in accounting firms: Good, Better, Best Pricing
Tiers allow you to experiment with pricing
My starting point:
- Best price is not more than 50% of the better price
- Good is not more than 25% below the better
- Good is your floor price
Most accounting firms are already doing fractional CFO work
They're just not getting paid for it
Clients don't need more spreadsheets
They need another strategic mind in the room who understands the numbers and helps them make better decisions
That's the service.

Will AI change the labor efficiency and margin benchmarks that accounting firms use today?
Probably
But I would not change the targets yet
Most accounting firms are still investing in tools, training, and AI projects before reducing labor or converting the new capacity into revenue
That means labor efficiency may get worse before it gets better
I discussed my approach for now with 700+ Kick C@$ accountants this morning

If I started my accounting firm again today, I'd do one thing completely differently
It isn't pricing
It isn't niching
It isn't technology
I'd start telling the story long before I had the business figured out
Building our glamping business completely changed how I think about growing any business
I wrote about why and how I'd build a CAS firm differently today with 700+ Kick C@$ accountants this morning

🤖 Made with AI
One of my most valuable AI lessons learned
Was realizing that AI works better when you give it a team instead of a task
I shared how I'm building prompts and custom GPTs that save me hours with 700+ Kick C@$ accountants this morning

Accounting AI can tell you what changed. Advisory explains why
That gap is where accounting AI will struggle
AI can categorize transactions
It can summarize financials
But it still depends on clean, complete client input.
And that rarely happens
So you get books that look right, but tell you nothing
No story. No insight. No direction
Faster work, weaker advisory
Better insights do not come from more automation
They come from better inputs and better conversations

Everyone says accounting AI is about to replace bookkeeping
I disagree
The accounting tech world keeps building pedestals. Some of the biggest ones have already collapsed
Until someone figures out how to train the monkey to juggle flaming torches, bookkeepers will be just fine
Will accounting AI help them? Absolutely
But it still doesn't solve the root issue

Every January, the gym empties
Not because people are lazy
but because motivation without meaning fades fast
Same with achievement
You hit the goal
Feel good… briefly
Bigger goals don’t fix it
They feed the ego, not the soul

A discovery meeting with a designer has me rethinking how we do CAS proposals
He didn’t pitch packages
He didn’t talk pricing
He asked me to define the scope first
That small shift forces clarity before pricing that will save CAS folks time

A question came up in The Kick C@$ Community about how to train accounting staff for advisory so firms can scale
It reminded me: CAS struggles are rarely about training
It’s about alignment and capacity
