I wrote about the impact of throwing the babies out with the bathwater when our culture got so secular, and what’s emerging out of secularism, and why it led me to leadership in a national church organisation link.medium.com/4n90Mh5BBY
Unexpectedly emotional to see this announcement (even though I knew it was happening!) because New Unity has been such a transformative place for me - so glorious to see them entering a new chapter with a brilliant new minister
NEWS from New Unity, the congregation here at the Meeting House (open to all faiths and none):
New Unity is today announcing the appointment of Adam Slate as its next Minister.

You can reduce the annoyance of people’s foolish beliefs by increasing your understanding of why they believe them
A fascinating episode of Leading, with the Archbishop of Canterbury, inc commendable openness about mental health. And if like @campbellclaret you are a ‘pro-faith atheist’, know that @UKUnitarians can be a spiritual home for free and enquiring community

One of my favourite interviews on @restispolitics LEADING - @JustinWelby - I may not do God but he says God does me! Fascinating on faith, the politics of the Church, mental health (including his own) and a remarkable back story alastaircampbell.org/2024/10…
What are the best ways of a dispersed international community to make collective decisions about how to use money? @RichDecibels I particularly trust the answer you might give 😊
Really delighted that my friend @dougald Hine is speaking at @UUA HQ in Boston next Friday 20th Sept, in conversation with Lewis Hyde, author of The Gift. Recommended to any friends in that neck of the woods

And likewise today in Eccles, the brilliant Jennifer Reid, singer of industrial revolution folk ballads, is singing at @montonunitarian for #HeritageOpenDays
(where you can check out stained glass windows of Isaac Newton et al)
I love connecting good people with good people 😊
At a time when people are desperately hungry for spiritual community, if this flavour of religion is the easiest one for them to find, well, then the rest of us aren’t doing our jobs well enough

I forgot to take a picture of the incredible lunch laid on by the Plymouth Unitarian congregation when we held our Exec Committee meeting there this weekend, but it was a joy to be there for the service on ‘deep time’ this morning - including this extraordinary early 20thC hymn

Glad to be one of the hundreds signing this open letter to the Attorney General on the sentences given to the #WholeTruthFive for peaceful protest. Our civil liberties were hard won and are precious even to those of us who have never blocked a road

This was lots of fun! Glad to share my experience of working with @UKUnitarians @SundayAssembly and @reading_walking, and innovating outside of tradition and institutions - and to learn from the many fascinating people at @ModernChurchUK
My privilege to give my reflection on Fresh Expressions and contemporary spirituality in 2014 @ModernChurchUK conference. With other fantastic panelists @jonnybaker @lzsl @Alisonrwebster
The great majority of blue plaques are for men so now is a good time to think about which women’s lives deserve to be celebrated
Less than 2 weeks are left to nominate someone for a blue plaque. 🔵

Totally agree that financial patronage of individual pioneering leaders would be a very impactful form of direct philanthropy
I know a few people we all look up to work wise are about to go under big style financially because they don’t earn the big charitable CEO bucks and stayed on the ground and in the work, if there are any high net worths wanting to distribute to the scale the supports the visionaries and leaderful people of this generation to keep afloat, discretely get in touch I can signpost.
Such an interesting overview - I knew about the Unitarian influence in the lives of Ramsay MacDonald and Neville Chamberlain, but I am delighted to learn that William Beveridge was the son of a Unitarian!
In recent months, several newspapers published stories saying Keir Starmer would be the UK’s ‘first atheist Prime Minister’ – but as we pointed out, that wasn't even true!
Here's our run-through of all SEVEN, plus some humanists who changed the world.

As the visits to the King and the swearing in on holy books begin, you might take a moment of ritual for yourself, and the commitments you want to make as we cross this threshold alternativeoath.uk/generalel…
An invitation to collective ritual as we step across a threshold with next week’s #GeneralElection2024
Whatever you think of the candidates, the parties, the electoral system, this moment of collective action can be a reminder of our power:
